All the grudges, realm pride, salt and trash talking makes me feel like this game is far from dead.

Early t4 is always rough. Practicing in lower tier helps somewhat because better game sense helps you get prepared for what is coming. Once you hit rank 40 you should probably head to pve and do beastlord, gunbad, bb/be and hunters vale.
