Everything that isn't a DoT is Direct Damage. It's not related to the type of damage (physical, spiritual,...) or type of ability (curse, hex,...)

Yes, arcing power is basicly the same as efficient runecarving and their destro equivalents.
Rune of Immolation is a dot (damage over time) and Efficient Runecarving works with direct (insta) damage abilities like Rune of Striking or Rune of Fire - however since lifetaps cannot crit using efficient runecarving / arcing power is mediocre at best.
As for damaging / hex / whatever: it's to do with class-specific dmg type and ability to cleanse those by opposition.
The point of Oathrunes is to give your partymember 60min buff (and some warband setups like to use oathrunes / zealot marks for coordinated aoe dmg). Buff fist, worry about fluff dmg second

Lifetaps cannot crit??
Why the hell is that??
I thought the damage part could crit no?
Effect of the great hybrid healer nerf aka shammie rework patch. Sure, dmg can crit but since we're talking about a healer class using a tactic to heal with dps skills (hybrid healing) we should be interested in healing aspect of it (healed for 50% of the dmg dealt). Since lifetaps cannot (heal) crit you loose a lot of healing potential that could keep your teammates up with dps skills alone (maybe with one or two occasional hots thrown in).
IMO now it's good for the +10 strikethrough component only and a wasted tactic slot outside of dps solo roaming build.
