oh and here I was of the opinion (after spending a few moments on the forums) we ARE dealing with a salty basement dwelling neckbeard greaseball with a buttmad boner...Wonder what his mom will think when outgoing CC account movements show some thousand dollars being moved to China

Best way to defend against a DDOS is to first understanding how they work. Which 90% of the population who play this game don't. How many DDOS threads do we need?

Whitelist registered users IP addresses - deny all other connections to the game server.
This would require all users sending in their IPs - imo this is well-worth the time and effort.

Most of the users have static IP addresses - you can also add safe IP ranges. List should be built step by step. Obviously this would not be the perfect solution for everyone, but at least it'd be a solution, if it works :)

If the connection reaches the acceptance/rejection stage on the target machine, the attack has already succeeded, correct?
