Aren't most aoe dots magical damage, while both long range ST dots are physical?

You are correct. Engi has a whole tree dedicated to magical damage.

Signal Flare and the Dot from Hollow Points is physical.
Frag Grenade, Incendary, Phosphour, Fricition Burn, Stiyk Bomb are Corporeal.

And I was talking shooting at real tanks, not these 2h chosen. The later ones can be taken down quite fast.

It's the same on Magus. Target proper tank and on a rare occasion of him not disrupting the dot you will see high crit of under 100. This all also depends on build, buffs from other players etc. Bolt of change does hit a proper tank for around 600 which is not bad.

Engie have: Armor debuff, an aditional BS tactic with armor pen, a autoattack and weapon dps contribution to their skills to make up for them doing physical damage. They have higher dmg potential.

Damage wise engineer is good as he can deal damage and interrupt or delay cast time without using silence or cc (Magus can not do this with magical attacks and there is also no auto attack). Problem with engineer is the knockback or silence which has a cast time + animation so the spell does not land straight as the cast time is finished but rather wait for additional animation of grenade flying before the cc is applied while Magus one is instant which should be changed for the engineer in way that animation should be tied to cast time, not have its own invisible cast time atop of default one.
