[Theorycrafing] Toughness beyond understanding

Hello guyz,
Groumf here,
Still trying to understand the maths behind RoR damage.

I always thought that Toughness was quite good but when analyzing the logs, I had often more interrogations than answers.
Sometimes, Toughness was reducing damage very well and other times, pretty poorly.

So, today, I decided to make some tests with my wife's bright wizard nuking my poor IB to the death.
For all the tests, I always had 813 toughness and 0 resist. (Wife has 679 Int)

Here are the results (from highest Toughness damage reduction to lowest):

- Slow Boil hits you for 59(-177). (Damage reduction by 75%)
- Fireball hits you for 405 (-461). (Damage reduction by 53%)
- Rain of Fire hits you for 123(-115). (Damage reduction by 48%)
- Ignite hits you for 143 (-76). (Damage reduction by 34%)
- Withering Heat hits you for 320(-153).(Damage reduction by 32%)
- Boiling Blood hits you for 569(-230). (Damage reduction by 28%)

3 conclusions here:
1- Slow Boil is totally broken. (And here, the 75% mitigation is clearly the cap created by Natherul X-months ago preventing Toughness from reducing the damage by more than 75% on its own)
2- Toughness has a very different impact on all the skills without any real visible pattern to me.
3- I understand now why Boiling blood hits me so hard. I can stack ridiculous amounts of toughness, it really doesnt care that much.

Just wanted to share those results with you guyz.

Im curious if your wife was running ignition. Is this list of abilities the order she hit you in ?

Nope, no Ignition for her.
And I had 0 resist btw and negative resist dont exist in that game.
All results are the same: Impact of Toughness on this skill, nothing else.

Toughness's role in the damage formula is one of a flat reduction - exactly the opposite of str/bs/int being a flat increase on abilities. Once you understand this the damage reduction becomes clearer - heavy hitters don't get reduced by much while low damage abilities get obliterated by toughness

Fireball and Boiling Blood have flat values that are pretty much the same (866 and 799) and one has a 53% reduction and the other one 28%.
Your explanation doesnt work Elemint.

I know this post and it doesnt explain it.
If this post was right, Fireball and Boiling Blood which are skills with almost exactly the same flat values should be mitigated the same way.
It is not the case.

Toughness reduction is applied before the cast time multiplication - so it gets multiplied too. Cast time of fireball is 3 seconds, cast time of BB defaults to 1.5 - so you have double the reduction from toughness on fireball.

There's no voodoo magic with resists - everything gets reduced by the same percentage
