why call it Midsummer when it's August?

Because this is technically the middle of summer? Summer = June 21st through September 22

first day of summer = SUMMER SOLSTICE June 21
first day of fall = FALL EQUINOX September 22
10 days of Summer in June
30 days of Summer in July
31 days of Summer in August
22 days of Summer in September

93 days of Summer in total
93/2 = 47
June 21 + 47 days = 7th of August

Close enough?
