Sorry, didn't understand this part. What does Stat Contention mean?

You know there's a 6% Block tali for Sent jewel, right? Just run that, Gunbad 2% and Genesis 3% if you want to maximize Block. Pretty sure that's not BiS but it's a lot of Block.
Yeah, I know, but I want to have parry tali in it for ranked, because as Kotbs you don't have any tactics or abilities to increase your parry (as 2h).

I think by stat contention they mean the avoidance stat bonus from shield ratings or weapon skill are hard capped towards their contribution when taking damage. You can't get more than 50% block benefit from a shield rating or more than 25% parry from weaponskill alone, just because stat doll might say you have more, it's not necessarily correct.

If a tank has 250 strength and hits your guard, and you are 2H with 1050 weapon skill...

1050/250 = 4.2 x 7.5 ≠ 31.5% = 25% bonus to parry (hard cap applied)

Guard damage via a sorc with 1050 intelligence to your 700 weapon skill...

700/1050 = 0.71 x 7.5 = 5% bonus to parry (no hard cap applied)

As far as I know there isn't a cap on defences from block bonus gear, renown or abilities, like when you use Shield Wall or Oathstone.

Stat Contention refers to the formula DefensiveStat/OffensiveStat * 7.5

The entire formula for avoidance is: StatContention + FlatAvoidance - AttackerStrikethrough.

Flat Avoidance refers to any flat avoidance you get such as Reflexes from renown for Parry, 3% Disrupt on a helmet, etc; Strikethrough is an attacker's "Reduced chance to be Parried" for example. There are innate examples as well, having a 2h Equipped gives you 10% Reduced chance to be Blocked.

Yes there are Hard Caps for avoidance from Stat Contention, but I'm pretty sure they only apply to Guard damage. Parry is 25% and Block is 50%.

is that because strikethrough doesn't apply to guard dmg? otherwise it seems like a pointless cap

Strikethrough does apply to Guard damage, but the cap is only for the Stat Contention portion of the formula, it doesn't affect your FlatAvoidance.

In reality, you are only going to achieve between 1-5% Block/Parry from Stat Contention against DPS players in most cases, as they will likely have between 800-1050 Main Stat, so the cap is only really relevant against very low main stat attackers such as Healers or Defensive Tanks.

Also, undefendable attacks are also undefendable Guard damage. A Chosen that uses Rending Blade who hits both the Tank and his Guardee will essentially do 50% Damage to the Guardee and 150% damage to the Tank.

Before anyone asks, this does not include Rampage (thank a higher power for that).

Don't get too into it if you can't decide.

Do you want to live longer, or do you want to mitigate more guard damage for your guardee... your choice.
