Server lag is fixed by restarting the server, which is done exactly with a patch. However, patches tend to cause memory leads when certain code isn't optimised fully, which could be the fault of any developer who has worked on the code for the patch in question. When different codes from different developers are patched in at the same time, the code in question that is causing the memory leak needs to be found first, then adjusted accordingly before a patch is fully working as it should.
