The recent actions by the group of individuals evidently caused a huge distress in the community, as not only the abuse of game mechanics took place, but it was combined together with the passive-aggressive disrespectful behaviour toward the community and the developers by those individuals.
As of now, it is irrelevant what those who took part in the abuse of the mechanics think or may say in their defence from now on, as some of them have already spoken and clearly have no remorse in what they have done, while others decided to opt-out, thus showing no remorse either. The damage has been done and it is now a matter of dealing with the consequences.
We cannot, even as a community, tell the developers what to do, simply because they are upkeeping this game on their own initiative, not just for themselves, but for the whole community.
However, no response by the developers towards such serious incidents can, with high probability, leave a mark on the developers themselves and the project and steer the community away from this project, which will degenerate the project as a whole and destroy all effort that has been generated for the past many years.
The Abuse of Game Mechanics
Abuse of game mechanics happens when an individual finds an irregular behaviour of a game mechanic and uses it to gain an unfair advantage over other players.
Therefore, we have two components to the abuse:
1. Finding the irregular behaviour of a game mechanic
Evidently, it took place, as it has been used on multiple occasions on another player/s.
The normal way of action for an individual who found an irregular behaviour of a game mechanic is to report it to the developers and not to use it on another player/s and without sharing such knowledge with anyone else until it is fixed.
Now, whether it has been reported to the developers is unknown; however, it does not matter at this point as the use of the irregular behaviour of a game mechanic on another player/s took place. Moreover, the knowledge of such irregular behaviour of a game mechanic was shared among other player/s, which indicates that it has been done on purpose to gain an unfair advantage over other players.
2. Gaining an unfair advantage over other players
The irregular behaviour of a game mechanic makes it so that the player/s who are being exposed to such a mechanic is:
(a) Unable to respond in a reasonable manner to counter such mechanic; and/or
(b) Must commit to an additional unreasonable effort to counter such mechanic.
In our case, while there are some counters to the irregular behaviour of a game mechanic, it makes exposed players unable to reasonably respond to such a mechanic without committing to an additional unreasonable effort.
Therefore, it is evident that the gain of an unfair advantage over other player/s took place, moreover, it took place in a group of individuals pursuing the same purpose of gaining an advantage over other player/s.
From the above mentioned, and from the actions of the individuals that took part in an incident, it can be concluded that the individuals that took part in the recent incident found the irregular behaviour of a game mechanic and, in a group, decided to gain an unfair advantage over other player/s. Thus, an abuse of the game mechanics took place.
It is irrelevant therein whether or not the mechanic has been deemed by the developers as an intended mechanic, as such mechanics creates an unreasonable action/s required to be performed by the exposed players mentioned in 2(a),(b).
The behaviour and the damage
Looking at the responses of some of the participants and those that decided not to make any statements, it becomes clear that none of them have any kind of remorse from their actions. By creating tension within the community with their abuse of game mechanics, those that responded have resorted to a passive-aggressive way of communication by strolling along the forum rules edges and 'baiting' other members of the community to breach the forum posting rules. Which in itself is a severe disrespect towards the community.
Their action have created a problem where the individuals involved in an incident whilst purposefully abusing the game mechanics, attempting to discharge their guilt by pointing fingers at the developers. This creates a situation that, if not handled immediately, will spin out of control very rapidly, long-term damaging the community and the project as a whole. Having individuals who are prone to abusing game mechanics to gain unfair advantage whilst being allowed to walk free out of creating such damaging situations will diminish the trust in the project rapidly and irreversably.
Conclusion
Therefore, taking into consideration the participation of the individuals in a game abusing mechanics to gain an unfair advantage over other players, their consequent passive-aggressive behaviour towards the community whilst showing no remorse in their actions, damaging the community and the project as a whole, creates a need to issue an appropriate penalty in order to prevent such incidents to happen in the future, to retain the balance, harmony in the community and ensure the trust into the project.
Consequences
Whilst the ability that has been identified and is acting in an irregular way has to be tweaked to avoid such occurrences in the future, the individuals who took part in the incident, abusing game mechanics to gain an unfair advantage while damaging the community and the project, are to:
1. Issue a public apology on the return of reconning forums to the community and the developers;
2. Refrain from abusing game mechanics in the future; or
3. Those that fail to fulfill sections 1,2 of the above are to be permanently banned.
The control must be maintained, else it will spawn more of such game-abusing individuals who have no shame at 'having fun' at the expense of the whole community whilst threatening the project as a whole.
