Versatile Ironbreaker builds?

I am so embarrassed about how little I remember about specs in this game. Part of the problem is that my PvE and PvP memories are all mixed up, so my sense of what was good is very borked.
I played IB as an alt in live release, but my wife and I are running IB/WP as a duo in RoR. As things are obviously focused pretty much exclusively on PvP now I'd like to work out a build that will be broadly useful. We definitely like scenarios, but RvR is also a draw. We were having tons of fun in T1 this weekend. We used to play ranged much more, so melee in RvR is a bit of a change.
What do you all recommend focusing on for a good IB build for this context -- paired with a WP, useful for SC and RvR? In RvR I remember feeling pretty useless as melee in high tier keep action, so I imagine we'll probably want to focus more on roaming.
I've noticed that a lot of folks advocate stacking armour/toughness, so I'm wondering if this philosophy also carries over talent trees as well. I *think* I remember the offensive tree being very strong, with the IB being a nightmare for squishies and still quite tough. That said, maybe I am underrating the tank tree? Either way the Brotherhood tree seems solid as support.
Any advice on the current vogue would be appreciated!
