I stopped playing some time ago. Some time before t4 hit. i recently started again yet i seem to have lost my old characters?

There was a character wipe a few weeks ago, basically if you hadn't logged in since April 2016 you loss your characters.

Accounts that were inactive 6 months +/- were wiped.

Afraid not, you will have to start from scratch again.
