Return of Reckoning

75% or more of my time will probably solo play (due to RL). I want to play a healer (with some self heals) which I can have the option of soloing even if a wee bit slow

Live I was a Warrior Priest, but I really do not remember much. Leaning to RP this time.... However I was told AM was best solo option, however I think I would need a lot of convincing.

AM is your best bet. RP and especially WP are best in a group.

If by solo you mean running around on your own, then yes, AM has a viable DPS spec (at the cost of nearly all your healing).

If you mean joining PUGs, scenarios, etc. and you intend to heal, I would say RP. They're relatively thick, very mobile, and offer a lot even to PUGs without having to do some kind of huge coordination.

How well does AM do in 1v1 and scenarios as DPS?

You will not be loved as a DPS AM in scenarios. That doesn't mean you're ineffective, it's just that people expect you to heal even though you're not specced to. A dedicated DPS will also be more effective in a group setting.

For 1v1, they're fantastic. Not really many classes that can beat you unless they catch you with your pants down. But remember the game isn't built around 1v1s, and they don't happen all that often.

As a DPS AM, it is important to always be on the move and to pay attention to your position. You hardly have armor available. With the right skills and equipment, the damage dealt is very high and around two thirds of a healer's healing can be made available to everyone. I really enjoy the AM; that's why I have one DPS AM and a Heal AM.
