Return of Reckoning

I'm having an ongoing issue with attempting to connect to the Return of Reckoning server. The error pops up in a window called "Critical Error", with the text "Authentication failed -- application will now terminate." There's a single "OK" button, which force-closes WAR.exe. I've had a look across the support board and attempted to solve the problem myself by following the solutions in this thread, which seems to consolidate possible solutions found in other threads on this board.

I'm running the game as downloaded using the .torrent file. Currently, I'm re-downloading the game from MEGA, to see whether my computer has had some sort of awful reaction to the version of the game I torrented. It's worth noting that a friend of mine was able to download and play the game just fine using the .torrent source.

So, I've tried:

Running RoRLauncher.exe as an administrator
Downloading Je Fawks Mini RoR Launcher and running it as an administrator
Deleting my cache and cache_test folders
Ensuring the game folder and files are not read-only, and are not being accessed by another program
Deleting my game directory entirely, and re-extracting it
Turning my firewall off

I was able to see something more than the background just once; the first time I deleted my cache and cache_test folders, but even then I was unable to complete a connection to the game server.

Does anyone have any suggestions or support to offer that might get me on the road to playing? This doesn't seem to be an issue the RoR team have cracked yet!

You password more then likely has to many specal characters. Try limiting your password to something more simple.

Uppercase and lowercase alphabetical characters, and numbers. No special characters at all!

Apologies for the double-post, but I've downloaded and extracted the game from MEGA, and checked that every suggested solution has been applied. This hasn't fixed the problem, so I'm guessing it's not an issue with the files I've downloaded.

did you try a simple password like all chars and no upper? there are alot of people playing right now so you have to be doing something wrong.

Yes, I tried changing my password to a simple, eight character long, lower-case string. That didn't solve the problem either. I haven't done anything except try to fix the problem in various ways! Thanks for the suggestions, though.

Please someone fix this... i've tried all the suggested fixes myself and nothing changed. Still getting the same error : Authentication failed -- application will now terminate. With both the new RoR launcher and the JeFawks one. I downloaded 2x times the torrent version and also tried the mirror one...neither of them work. As Ixius i followed all the suggested steps but it's still not working.

Seems like you use windows 8. Was the client/launcher tested on win8 already?

I'm running Windows 8.1, but I've tried various compatibility modes for the launchers and for WAR.exe, none of which have solved the problem.
