AAO buff question

First of all sorry for my english and thx for bring this game upp again.
I have problems with the AAO buff. When I enter an area it gives me, for example, 200 AAO buff, but if I enter to defend a castle I lose it in about 1 minute. It is normal? is it only done for when you roam the buff and get lost in defenses? If so, what is the point of defending a castle 30 against 300?
