Hello there!, i'm about to start playing the game and i've been doing some research about the current classes. So far i 'm thinking about magus, shadow warrior and chosen.
I almost always prefer some ranged playstyle over melee being the chosen the only melee i'm interested in, and due to my kinda "anti-social" personality i play mostly solo, so i need help with some insight and read your opinions on which class will suit me best for all kind of content in the game and won't get me kicked out from partys and stuff.
I've seen some videos and read some posts about how "bad" shadow warrior is but I honestly don't understand a lot since they use some terminology that I simply don't know.
Thank you all.
(English is not my main language, so i'm sorry for every brain cell lost my grammar may cause : ) )

Solo playing isn't much of a thing in PvP, because it's army Vs army, you aren't gonna get much in the way of duels, you're gonna end up with other allies on your side.
But if you want an independent character I'd go with a a Magus probably. Chosen has to shield others and try to stay with them, but on the pve flip side of it you can quest ok with a tank since... Tanky.
Again, dungeons also require cooperation .... Tanks have to guard alternating allies to reduce the damage they take and absorb mob threat. In this sense a Magus is easier you just have to focus on yourself.
If you would prefer to do order then shadow warrior is ok, consider you're a glass cannon (applies to magus too but Magus has more aoe attacks, shadow warrior needs to focus DPS by continuously shooting) so you will get blown up a fair bit.
Have you considered a bright wizard? That's a very good choice also for order and ranged. Engineers are more supporty but also fun with a turret.

I see, i was curious about solo playing since there are a lot of videos on youtube about people just going on their own and fighting other players and stuff.Malessar wrote: ↑Tue Jun 24, 2025 3:01 pm Solo playing isn't much of a thing in PvP, because it's army Vs army, you aren't gonna get much in the way of duels, you're gonna end up with other allies on your side.

I had the impression that chosen could be like a bruiser instead of a tank so i guess i will remove it from my list of interests.
when you say "focus dps" you mean like being completely stationary while attaking or ?
I did check the bright wizard and the sorcerer but that mechanic about doing dmg to myself ins't my thing really, it reminds me of blood magic in dragon age but waay less tankier from what i've seen and as for engineer, the concept itself just doesn't appeal to me in any way xD
Re: Newbie needs some advice.
Hey i would not recommend solo play in general in this game anymore but if you are a masochist then you should pick a class that can pick thr fights they want and can disengage if at disadvantage. WHs and WEs are designed for this so they are great but both of them are melee. WH has a bit lf range due to pistol but its not a ranged class at all. Other than these Magus is pretty good SW is also good. Healer dps classes are ok and can be pretty frustrating but its basically dot and run/kite. To be honest any class can be okay but only at rr 80+ with Bis gear. So just play what you have fun with.
I would not pick bw or sorc for solo like it was mentioned before unless you hang put with the blob.

Play whatever you want and however you want. Shadow Warrior is incredibly overpowered when played correctly, and they are superbly good for solo play. My SW Is currently rank 1 renown earner this week and that was only from solo roaming, you can solo roam to incredible success if you want tomidkel12 wrote: ↑Tue Jun 24, 2025 3:28 pmI see, i was curious about solo playing since there are a lot of videos on youtube about people just going on their own and fighting other players and stuff.Malessar wrote: ↑Tue Jun 24, 2025 3:01 pm Solo playing isn't much of a thing in PvP, because it's army Vs army, you aren't gonna get much in the way of duels, you're gonna end up with other allies on your side.

Re: Newbie needs some advice.
As others I'd not recommend going solo for 1v1/x as a newbie.
It's by far the most punishing game mode and unless you are very good and on a good class, you'll likely quit before max Lvl.
This is game you have +50 people warbands.
You have 24 and 12 mans, 6 mans, trios and duos, and even if you get a fair 1v1, you still have big gear and sometimes decade of skill gap, not to mention counter-classes and the game not being balanced for 1v1.
A lot of the 1v1 honor has gone as well, not all, but way more than when I started 1v1s are just seeing as an easy kill for the side with more players joining.
And everyone seems desperate for even 1 kill and will even have 24 mans go out of their way to chase you for minutes.
Soloing is also pretty expensive in consumables if you want best chances, not great for a newbie.
Anyway, I find the challenge enjoyable in moderations, you might too, just be warned if you want to stick around.

Re: Newbie needs some advice.
It's totally fine to level up and play solo, many of us have done so and enjoyed it.
Playing ranged DPS is the easiest when playing solo. You can "blob surf" in RvR, which means following other warbands around and just attacking from range. You get some protection, and the odd heal, just from being near the warband, and the fact that you are ranged will keep you somewhat safe. You will be squishy, so expect to die a lot, but this is a PvP game so you're gonna die a lot not matter what you play! Its just part of the game!
The downside to playing ranged DPS is that they are very common, so if you decide you want to start playing in groups more often it can be harder to get in. Similarly, when you sign up for scenarios as ranged DPS, you're gonna have a harder time because tanks and healers are always more needed.
Chosen (or any tank really) is a good choice. Tanks are always needed for groups and have a large impact on the outcome of fights. But all tanks also have a 2 handed DPS spec which will make things quicker for doing quests, and quicker for leveling up in PvP. You do lose a lot of tankiness, so solo 2h tank in RvR is painful until you get endgame gear, but once you get that gear they can be really effective.
Something you might consider is playing a DPS healer, like shaman or archmage. That way, you get the advantage of doing fairly decent ranged DPS, with the added advantage that you have some self-healing. You won't be wanted in warbands or scenario groups, but for solo roaming in the RvR zones, they're pretty effective.
If you decide to go for DPS tank or healer, it may be worth attempting to keep multiple gearsets - primary role gear (tank/healer) for when you're in a group, and secondary role (DPS) for when you are solo roaming. That can be tough to do whilst leveling up, but if you play long enough you'll probs end up with both eventually!

Re: Newbie needs some advice.
As some have said, you can solo just fine... but with certain specs. If you want to party or warband play, that requires a different spec entirely.
Chosen are one of the better tanks to solo with but if you want to party/warband then a shield is a must have and learning to guard is a must.
Ranged dps is great solo but be prepared to be kicked out of warbands as the emphasis is on aoe dps more and what you can bring to the party.
Currently the best solo classes are AM/shaman but you need gear and renown ranks to be effective... and the best way to get that is to group up.. and you guessed it, no-one in a party/wb wants a healer that can't heal.
So basically some classes are better for solo play but you have to be ready for the grind to get up to that level to be effective solo.
