New / Vet Players: What things do you wish the game taught via tutorials?

Over the last few years, we've started building in a number of tutorials / quests into the leveling progression with the goal of teaching newer players things that can help them as they level up. Some examples include:
  • Buying faster mounts
  • Speccing Renown / Mastery Points
  • Warcamp Bonus Damage in RvR
  • Where to purchase Genesis Items / Subjugator weps

Etc. Dragonback Pass, the new T1 Dungeon, also focuses on teaching base mechanics that can be important later, like how to Guard / Guard Swap, how to Rez and Cleanse, swap targets mid fight etc.

Are any other things you think it would be good to teach newer players in similar fashion? For new players, anything that confused you as you leveled up? And for Vets, anythings you see new players asking about often?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts and ideas!

I would definitely say how talismans work and the importance of them. I'm not sure if it's already covered.

Maybe a short questline with recommended talismans for different specs. Like, if you want to play an MDPS, you can use strength talismans for damage increase and parry/block strikethrough, weaponskill talismans for armor penetration, etc. It's been a long time, but I was totally lost with all the attributes in the beginning.

And maybe potions? Like, which one works with others? It took me a while back then to understand this.

Oh, and what is the resistance for? I didn't know what the heck corporal resistance is and who does deal corporal damage. Same with the other resistance.

Also, I would recommend a big window at the start of the game, if you make a new character, that says that you can play most of the content in this game solo, but due to the nature of the game, it will seem unfair in many areas, and a recommendation for group play. But it shouldn't sound too harsh so as not to scare off new players. Maybe a short highlight of the positive aspects of group play and the friendly community in this game that most of the time will help you out if you have questions.

Well things like talismans and potions are covered, IF you follow the first Quests in your starting area. In those quest you get your first talismans and a text that explains how to put them into gear. And there in is also a hard to miss quest, where you get your first armor and stat potion.

There is also a Tutorial, that many players just tend to ''X don't show this in the future''.

I think the biggest problem is that RoR/WaR was and is an RPG. And that means that you either READ or at least overflow every bit of text the game gives you, or you will end up dead and respawning 100 times. Because you ''i will not read that wall of text'' when it told you that the Quest item in your Inventory will debuff the Level 40++ Hero mob, so you can kill it with 1 hit.

When I think back to 2008 when I first started WAR, the biggest advice I feel I was missing was the importance of PvP.

That may sound strange, but for many of us we came to WAR from typical PvE themeparks like WoW or LotRO. Our mindset was stuck in the typical themepark thinking of doing lots of quests to level up and gear up, whilst doing some PvP on the side. Even at endgame, the game was advertising plenty of dungeons, so the PvE seemed viable. But back then, it really wasn't, and doing PvE was actually harmful (not to mention totally frustrating with the RNG gear drops!!!).

RoR is a lot better for PvE gearing, you guys have done a great job on that front making it more consistent and nearly on par with PvP.

However, I still feel like you're shooting yourself in the foot if you do too much PvE during the leveling process. Even if you level up doing nothing but scenarios, your renown rank will fall behind. Throw in some questing, or grinding PQs for mayhem/ruin, and your renown rank falls a long way behind and it's really hard to catch up.

So, my advice is to somehow explain to players the importance and benefit of leveling up through PvP, and the potential downsides of leveling up in PvE. Make sure its an informed choice for players.

This could perhaps be done by a series of level 5-10 quests that guide them more strongly towards PvP (i know you've got a couple of quests regarding discordant scs and rvr kills), but maybe give a quest to reach RR10, guide them towards the different PvP gear vendors so they can see what is on offer. Also guide them towards the renown points trainer as this is really one of the major benefits of leveling through PvP.

As another point, not necessarily an advice for new players, but I'd love it if the Instructors Scrolls thing (-75% xp) worked on scenario xp too. This would really help leveling players not outlevel their renown rank, and potentially hang out in mid-tier scenarios for longer so they can hit 40 with higher renown ranks and a decent chunk of crests in their pockets. This would be especially good for players who don't like the idea of getting steamrolled in RvR by all the high geared/ranked players that this mature server now has.

tutorial to teach everybody how to switch groups in Sc's. How to click the grey flag button. it seems silly but i think its mandatory to have a chance in a SC. I see solo healer useing groupheal when nobody is in a group....

Bolster and maintaining a healthy RR vs XP level.

No idea how to explain it in a tutorial (its definitely a meta thing) but /advice has a lot of questions about how to be "competitive" in T2+ while levelling. And a significant number of people don't understand how bolster works or why they might want to keep their RR level at or above their XP level.

I mean, ideally the game gods would make it so it doesn't make it as much of an issue (e.g. nerf SC experience) but it doesn't change the fact this stuff gets said over and over again in advice in response to questions from new players.
