Btw im old wow private servers player and like we all know some things work differently from official servers and thats why some old guide might nit help me that much as you can.
If you're a 'Veteran' from other MMOs, you might be able to see what kind of skills will benefit your gamestyle. Guard is one of the few skills that are actually kinda unique. There are plenty 'cast it on someone, receive his dmg'-skills in other MMOs, but most of them won't make you stay that close to your target, while 'only' splitting the received dmg between both of you. Enemy-Addon will be a gain, since it will show an indicator of how far your guarded target is away, as well as marking that one, so you can identify him in the heat of a battle.
So root to protect your backline, or bypass the melee-train to enable your party to mash up the backline. Snare melees, that are trying to grab your healer, or that are trying to prevent your mates to maul theirs. Knockback on other tanks that are guarding someone, so they aren't within the reach of the skill (30 ft), or knock that annoying healer off a cliff, so the rest of the enemies party won't receive any healing. Interrupt that ressurrection with your taunt, so that killed mdps will stay down for some more seconds, while the healer will waste more time to rez him (unable to heal others during that time).
Use your skills offensive and defensive, you need to be able to switch. You're one of the keyplayer that will protect your party as well as create an opening, so your mates can dive into a valuable spot of the enemies party. Tanks in WAR aren't the 'soak damage'-type of toons, like in other games. They have some really nice skills that will enable them to actually turn the tides rather quick, since they are able to affect the movement of the enemy.
But thats something that enemy-tanks are trying as well, so watch out for them.
Even as dps-tank, watch out for your teammates. If you see your only healer getting attacked, while you're about to finish your enemy, leave your target and get the f... to your healer. You won't survive, if you loose your healer. You're a tank, made to protect, given tools to protect, so protection is your duty, even if you can ditch out some damage if skilled/geared well. Most dps-tanks (I encountered) are tunnel-visioned.
Play your role well and you'll be loved, like a godlike healer is loved.
