You can remove the mask appearance and get the original helm appearance back.

when you apply an alternative appearance there is a warning : Are you sure you want to apply this item` s appearance .The current appearance will be lost. What does that mean then?

It means that the previous alternate app will be remplaced with new one, just that. You wont lose anything.

How ? Well i have just tried and now my merc helm is avatar googles and sure i can change its appearance to something else but not revert back to mercenary helm appearance..w/o having a 2nd merc helm to apply the appearance with. imagine this for Conq helm (which looks very nice for WL )Now i don't even have one of those yet let alone 2 .The change is stupid imo.Dont fix what aint broken springs to mind

How about you open alt appearance tab and just remove the goggles from your helm slot to get your merc appearance back.

you are right .i was trying to drag it out ,which didn't work but right clicking gives you the option to remove appearance .yes you are right

don't worry. you're not alone.
I had exact same issue when my toon was young.
