IF it is a shield you will bet block but don't have any abilities to use your shield with. Also I guess you will get a hefty heal malus.
Lots of Theorycrafting here. Maybe it is just a cosmetics thing as they have maybe found some old files in the client that were never used. Like all the Hammerers Gear.
