Is Chosen a good first class to play? How is damage?

Not really sure what to expect, I'd like a class that can do decent damage (be able to kill someone) but also survive.

Is Chosen a good first class to play?
How is Chosen DPS (with shield or 2h)?

Chosen is a tank but requires a lot of time investing in top tier gear to do even what some could be consider to do reasonable damage, if you want a dps that is tanky, pick mara.
