Lairs?

Can someone please clue me on on lairs. I keep seeing them mentioned in-game, my questions--if answered at all--are responded to in cryptic one-liners that tell me nothing.

So, what are they/where (exactly please) are they? Why do people care about them? Anything else you can think of.

Lairs are special npc bosses that exist in the RvR lakes of each zone, t1 has them but their are none for t2 iirc, anyway when killed the bosses have a chance to drop blue colored items for either faction, when killed the bosses will take between 2-4 hrs to respawn, after level 12 the lair gear will be inferior to gear you get at lvl 13 and byond but may people want it because the items look cool if you REALLY want lair gear right now the only ones worth getting are the ones dropped by the bandit queen lair boss in dwarf lair

thank you for the replies. it's funny, i was just at the hammerwiki recently looking up the game's API but it didn't occur to me to go back there for this. "funny" as in, sometimes i'm retarded.
