Black Orc help

Dumb questions, but while leveling should I worry moreso about dps for my 2 handed black orc, or the stats of a weapon? I have an axe that has about half the amount of strength and dps but 2% more crit than what im currently using.

Also, should I be trying to keep all my defensives up while doing my rotation?
