Magus can easily put on deftard toughness and still get his Int to 1050.
That is the main difference to engi who needs for ST capped BS and as much WS as he can get. Engi on Grenade also can go BS max and rest in defense.
So on your magus you can get a reasonable amount of defense and don't loose much offensive capabilities.

Re: [Magus] What/where/how
That 18% parry is surely gonna help against WLs, WHs and other melee classes. Especially when getting hit from the back during KDs etc.

That 18% parry is surely gonna help against WLs, WHs and other melee classes, which is also why every melee class is training parry.
People who have no idea about the class, and which are assuming that 18% dmg reduction vs exactly the classes magus will fight in open rvr isn't worth the points, are amusing.

Honestly cannot tell if you are serious or being next lever bait, but trying to explain why this is so wrong will be lost anyway.Zxul wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 12:03 pm That 18% parry is surely gonna help against WLs, WHs and other melee classes, which is also why every melee class is training parry.

@OP
You should never spec parry for your renown points in any spec on Magus. Go for Magic Crit top priority, Crit reduction second, if you are missing int with low lever gear dont be afraid to spend it on Int until you get better gear, around rr60 you will have enough int for gear to respec out of it.

Re: [Magus] What/where/how
WL and WHs will always have your back and since magus have no STR, attacking you from the front will work every time because of how strikethrough works.Zxul wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 12:03 pm That 18% parry is surely gonna help against WLs, WHs and other melee classes, which is also why every melee class is training parry.

Also...18% parry doesn't = 18% damage reduction....

And another great example of someone not playing the class, beyond possibly glass cannon spec, and having no idea about how tank spec works.abodam wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 12:37 pmHonestly cannot tell if you are serious or being next lever bait, but trying to explain why this is so wrong will be lost anyway.Zxul wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 12:03 pm That 18% parry is surely gonna help against WLs, WHs and other melee classes, which is also why every melee class is training parry.

You should spec parry for your renown points in tank spec on Magus. Magic Crit is your pretty much last priority- your dmg comes from flamer shortening dot ticks / from spamming Lash after placing Glean/Pand, not from trying to be wannabe sorc. Ignore Crit reduction as well- you can't have everything, and getting 900+ toughness > less crits (since toughness reduces critted hits dmg before the crit calculation).
"if you are missing int with low lever gear dont be afraid to spend it on Int until you get better gear,"- another great advice of how to die to wl/wh in 0.01 sec, basically look at the post above mine as a list of what not to do as a magus.

Re: [Magus] What/where/how
You never, ever spec Parry on a defensive Magus (there's several other RR abilities that would trump it), and crit reduction is vastly superior to it.

Re: [Magus] What/where/how
Wl when he jumps to you won't have your back. WH will have your back for 3 sec, after that if he is still getting your back, since everything you use is instacast/castable on move, means you doing it wrong.Tankbeardz wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 12:50 pmWL and WHs will always have your back and since magus have no STR, attacking you from the front will work every time because of how strikethrough works.Zxul wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 12:03 pm That 18% parry is surely gonna help against WLs, WHs and other melee classes, which is also why every melee class is training parry.

And now to the lesson about game mechanics:
1. How much str you have has no effect at all on how much you parry- you gain parry from ws, not from str.
2. Strikethrough gained from having high str only works vs parry gained from ws- it has no effect vs parry gained from renown items.
And yes, 18% hits parried=18% less dmg.

Re: [Magus] What/where/how
So if you parry attack for 100 and you get hit by attack for 800 it is 18% damage reduction?Zxul wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 12:58 pmWl when he jumps to you won't have your back. If you like parry that much, its your fight, but this logic is just flawed. 18% Parry is just 18% parry. You can get lucky or you will get rekt with no parry.
I will stay with my bad glass cannon spec killing people in one rotation using my shitty spec, you stay with yours, but do not confuse new players with nonsense please.

And here we have Peter.peterthepan3 wrote: ↑Fri May 17, 2019 12:54 pm You never, ever spec Parry on a defensive Magus (there's several other RR abilities that would trump it), and crit reduction is vastly superior to it.
Peter unlike previous poster, you should know the game mechanics, even if we might just a bit of disagree about class balance and dok.
1. Really getting the crit reduction (275 init+0% to be crit) won't be possible on magus, unless you are willing to sacrifice toughness. Note that testing, 900+ toughness is superior to crit reduction setup, as far as mitigation goes.
2. So what are we looking at is FS 2 or 18% parry. Notice how with low base init, after a single init debuff magus still ends at high chance to be crit even with FS2- meaning FS2 reducing dmg by pretty little % after init debuff, while 18% parry will still be 18% parry no matter your chance to be crit.
3. Extra bonus- less chance to be crit only reduces the % of the dmg which you take, while parry also gives you 18% chance to avoid the secondary effects which the ability might have, such as KD, snare, stugger, ets ets.
