Tanks Guard

Don't worry, this isn't a post about needing a change - just asking for some clarification. :)

When you Guard an ally (and they are within range), is the damage that is split with them reduced before or after the split?

Here is what I mean spelled out a bit differently, because that came out a bit confusing:

Option A:
- Guarded ally would take 100 damage (before mitigation)
- Ally takes 50 (before mitigation) -> Ally's mitigation reduces damage to x
- You take 50 (before mitigation) -> Your mitigation reduces damage to y

Option B:
- Guarded ally would take 100 damage (before mitigation)
- Damage is reduced based on Ally mitigation -> Ally would take x damage -> Splits half with You -> Ally takes (x/2)
- Half of x is redirected to You -> You take (x/2) damage

So far, I have not seen myself take pretty much any damage from Guarding an ally. This makes me believe that Option A is the current one in place, as the damage that gets redirected to me then gets mitigated by my defense, rather than the squishy's that I'm Guarding.

Just wanting to get clarification. :)

Guard splits dmg of your target after their reduction, meaning your toughness, armor, resists don't matter, only your guardees.

Bleh, that blows, but probably more fair that way. Thanks for the response.

Do you happen to know if it works on Sorceress backlash damage?

I think it does.

Yes I believe you can reduce backlash dmg with guard, unless that was altered in a very recent patch.

Cool, I don't see too many Sorcs, but a nice little gimmick to know they can stay at 100% longer.

Thanks guys

I mean, a sorc doesnt need a guard unless bombing. Backlash damage can be totally ignored with a healer.

But what if there is no healer in your group? (I know, we're getting a bit off topic, and most situations will have a healer at least sort of healing outside of their group, so it won't be a common scenario - just think its a nice touch is all)

This is one of the reasons two tanks guarding each other is very effective, especialy in a scenario holding an objective
