Ok so, i'll be clear about DDOS : You can't protect 100% from DDOS unless you are billionnaire.
The hardware used for that costs my pay for 10 years, so no, we won't be able to have that here.

FYI, for last DDOS attack (on web server), more than 10k computers where used... BTW, we don't have more DDOS on the web server, but just on the app server for a few days.

About Cloudflare : "CloudFlare, Inc. is a U.S. company that provides a content delivery network and distributed domain name server services, sitting between the visitor and the CloudFlare user's hosting provider, acting as a reverse proxy for websites". (dixit wikipedia)
So, it can't be used for the app server, the one lagging, because... it's not a web application.

OVH gives an anti DDOS protection, which is not as much performant as priceless hardware, but it does the job most of the time.

Yes a lot of players have knowledge about DDOS, hacking and whatever
Yes a lot of players, and even more, the staff, are upset by DDOS

But no, there is no simple way to solve that.

If someone have THE solution, he can pm me.

Just to finish, the lag is not only related to DDOS, but mainly on code optimisation problems too. The dev team is working hard on that right now, but it's not easy to solve.

I really hope everything's going better soon, but we can't tell you when.

DaScoub,

Can you comment as a developer if addons would be attributable to the lag? I feel confident that back on live, lag issues arose when a popular addon grew in use. I understand that most addons perform calculations client side so one person using an addon on their computer should theoretically not cause another indivdiual lag...but just wanted to confirm if that is actually true. Some of these addons are doing alot of calculations, parsing combat text etc... is it possible that they could be contributing to server lag (i.e. could addons be sending additional information requests from client to server, above and beyond the amount the original game would have done, that is therefore creating way more server requests and thus lag for everyone??)

Theoretically, however, could CloudFlare protect the login server/the website against these (excessive) DDOS attacks?

If things are going that way, I wouldnt even think about delaying next tiers. If we cant stop DDoS and fighting with lags will take months/years, I would just focus on releasing another content. Its just my point of view.

rushing content is never a good way to deal with the current problems

on side note devs give too much recognition to the ddos attacker which imo is not good way to deal with such situations. If the person behind the attacks do it cos of some grudge, just ignore him completely and he will lose interest. But when every second post is DDOS attacker that, DDOS this, etc it become some sort of motivation for some specific type of person and that attention will just fuel him to continue doing that

I don't know for addons, because i'm web admin, and server admin.

For cloudflare, it's only for web. So everything else is not possible.

And yes, speaking of DDOS guy is not the good way, but everyone does... I just answer to questions.

I know the RoR team isn't accepting donations and what not, but I figure I can still mention a solution I've seen in the past when it comes to being DDoSed(?).

I used to play on a private UO shard which was experiencing exactly the same thing, getting DDoSed all the time, at times it was almost unplayable. So what the dev/admin team did was this, they had "backup" servers put up so there was potentially 3 different servers to use. If the NA one was being attacked and crashed, they'd switch to server #2 in NA, if that started being attacked they'd switch to their European one, and around and around it went. The only thing we as players had to do was to change which login adress the launcher used.

Now, I have no clue whatsoever how they made this work, how they set it up or how much it cost. But it worked like a charm!

The "main" server would be attacked and crash, switch to a different one and the attacks stopped (Atleast, for a pretty long time), and if the attacks followed along with the switch, they just changed it again. And finally the DDoSing stopped. I think maybe because it became too big a hassle for the guy doing it/paying someone else to do it.

I can't repeat enough a premium host would deal with DDoS attacks. It's their job to provide protection. You can google DDoS protection, talk about it what CloudFlare does, the real solution still need experts, who work for the hosting company and know their job.
