As far as i remember, it was practically impossible to block the ramps, because of the sheer amount of tanks you require. Additionally the defenders have to split up for blocking both ways, while the attackers just have to choose the way where to zerg upstairs. When you want to defend a keep, defend the main gate.
I had a lot epic defenses in the lower tiers.
There only have to be ways to repair oil or inner doors.
