For tanks( actually tank classes, not tanky mdps) regen is mandatory in solo or they will not have a good time with all the abusive dots and rdps etc. It is the only archetype where regen stacking is justifiable.

It was tons of more fun playing dps tanks and also playing against them when there was little to no regen(times when there was like max 2 or 3 people on the server whit fleshrenders and that was it).
You had to think all your moves and time skills, now you just roam as a regen and dont care about anytiming or positioning mostly because you outlast everyone and can escape allmost all fights whit little to no effort.
It is.
Low mobility, no detaunts, no mdps charge skills, no ranged attacks. Regen is a tanky stat for small scale and guess what archetypical category tanks fall into?
As for ''dps solo tank'' maybe they were a thing back when the upper gear tier was limited to Vanq gear, with the amount of dps/dots/ ranged damage etc there is no such thing as a ''DPS solo tank'' unless you have a pocket healer with you. A solo tank need regen to even stay alive, not a question about skill or a simple dot spamming shaman will make your life miserable.
Tank ability to escape is none-existent if attacked by competent players, can be abused in so many ways by hard CC, pulls, snares etc. This may indeed be a skill issue by the players attacking the tank or a gap in gear( solo roamers are usually geared and will try-hard on potions).
