[DEV DIARY #1] Many informations about RoR.

There wouldn't be WAR without Barnett, he is the one that brought GW and Mythic together. I believe he used to work for GW at some point.

Actually, so do I. Can't put my finger on it tho.Londo wrote:There wouldn't be WAR without Barnett, he is the one that brought GW and Mythic together. I believe he used to work for GW at some point.
Ok, what about that ragtag bunch of other derps?
Re: [DEV DIARY #1] Many informations about RoR.
You recall correctly. There was an enormous effort on the part of the leaders of that Great Endeavor, who personally hand-delivered the first request/proposal to GW licensing department. I'm pretty sure the whole saga from beginning to end is still and forever recorded on Face Book, with the details of their immense effort recorded for the huge group of us meticulously as it played out.Londo wrote:I recall some WAR players wrote to Games Workshop CEO in attempt to prevent shutdown. GW responded by stating they are not the ones shutting war down. They had 5 year contract with EA, when contract was up, EA decided not to renew. GW would have been fine with renewal of contract.
The GW CEO finally responded with what appeared, and felt, to be a truly empathetic letter, also recorded on the group's Face Book annals, detailing, in paraphrase, the last thing GW, a big group of gamers-at-heart, ever would conceive of taking away anyone else's immersive game, but EA's 51% share meant, legally and literally, there was nothing GW could do to stop EA from pulling the plug, and EA was not about to even consider allowing ANY other entity to even glimpse earnings on something EA saw massive quarterly/yearly losses on after such a heavy and lengthy investment time with such a large negative return.
GW was powerless to stop the dEAth of W.A.R. I believe any fault that could be laid with them would be in the totally hands off approach to their IP. The rest of the blame lies with Mythic, firstly, for being immature punks who pissed in EA's wheaties leaving EA with a bad enough 'taste in their mouth' to just kick the lot of them upstairs and let them drown. Such a pathetic, pitiful end to the grandest idea for MMO's, ever.

I am doubly grateful, now and forever, for the effort of any and all who 're-made' my dreams come true. Long Live RoR

I can also see it from EA's perspective. Quarter after quarter, WAR was loosing subscriptions, with little hope of a turn around. EA is a for profit business, I don't blame them for pulling the plug on unprofitable War and Woh. I do blame them for bad management choices, and creating toxic work environment. (Apparently its the way EA does business, absorb smaller studios, install incompetent managers, close down the franchise and move on.)
To see how to properly run a niche mmo, look at Eve. Eve's developers are always highly engaged with the community. War's management very often had long periods of no communication.

I think there's something we can learn from this here.Londo wrote:To see how to properly run a niche mmo, look at Eve. Eve's developers are always highly engaged with the community. War's management very often had long periods of no communication.

I think EA invested money in Warhammer with the though of making mainstreamly succesful game. I don't know how big of audience they were expecting in their internal targets, but I genuinely believe they did not want a niche mmorpg.
That's why they pulled the plug.

Wasn't Mythic transformed into studio creating mobile games or shut down or something like that?
EA propably did not want to keep Mythic as a PC centric desktop developement studio anymore, so that's second reason to shut down War.
