Medallions and Emblems are a major part of the game. They keep players playing, mostly because of the effort and grind needed to obtain them. The methodology behind medallions and emblems is that, especially for higher tier gear, it takes times and dedication to obtain them. Therefore, it is based on the belief that time and effort pays off.
What I'm about to say is not a suggestion, but a "what if" scenario. What if medallions and emblems were not necessary to purchase armor sets? What if renown rank alone dictated whether or not you could obtain armor pieces?
I imagine that if so, then armor sets would be seen more as a milestone than anything else. Once a player reached a certain renown rank, he could be able to swap his old gear for new, better gear, immediately. I imagine that it would level out the playing field, but at the same time reward those who put in time to level their renown. Obtaining armor sets would no longer require RNG, since you don't have to depend on medallion / emblem drops. What's even better, is that a player could choose to do SCs over oRvR, and vice versa, to obtain sets which would normally require them to pick one over the other.
I suspect that players would therefore choose to only do SCs if that were the best means of receiving renown, or oRvR for the same reasoning. Therefore, I imagine that SCs and oRvR would have to give incentives that level the advantages / disadvantages of either one. These could range from items, to accessories, to trophies, etc.
Perhaps this would ruin the spirit of grinding, since it definitely makes the game easier in retrospect. The grind is what keeps players playing. If they don't have something to grind for, then they won't play I suppose.

If a grind is keeping you playing then you aren't playing right.. Grinds are so.. 1990's and have little merit in the modern age. Especially with the ADD of gamers with the advent of mobile games and quick fixes. Most of us gamers have grown up. Have lives and better things to do then grind 300 hours a month for some pixel prize. Not worth it and this is why grind games don't succeed anymore. (UNLESS they provide a method to reduce/avoid the grind.)CzarRedwall wrote:Medallions and Emblems are a major part of the game. There is no 'effort' for the grind. Just time.. Unemployed people, kids, whatever may tolerate the grind but the civilized world won't.. There is nothing 'fun' about the grind. There is no sense of 'accomplishment' other than a fleeting 60 second feeling of 'I did it' then that memory is relegated to the trash bin.
People want to play games. Not grind games.

You're preaching to the choir my dude. But grinding is the method to reward players for their time. And in a game like RoR, it is especially true.
Re: Getting Rid of Medallions and Emblems
Live server was the best example of currencies being totally out-of-control..
I would like to see more option to "trade in" old pvp gear for currency (rather than silver/brass coins). All in all, not too much to be done until end game gear is implemented as Anni gear is currently way over-valued as it is the top set right now.
But as the idea, yea, RR is the real milestone factor even if a huge amount of players and Devs disagree.
Grinding is not fun, and as a side note - I would talk about the 'keep ranking system' as a grind, is not fun, it's laborious and unskilled, results in players being rather unexcited and bored/detached from getting involved IMHO.

Gear, achievements, currency, mounts, carrots on sticks is what its all about. The moment you start making things easier for the low % of complainers, is the moment a great game goes to hell.
THUMP - "MEDIOCRE!!" ...Who's laughing now?

More like the vast majority of the population that can't or won't spend hundreds of hours in a grind based game when there are plenty of games out that don't require giving up your life to play.
Remember, grinds are either gone from most games or seriously reduced OR a 'bypass' for the grind is available.. You know, like money spent gives you bonuses to reduce the grind. I spent $3,000 on Wargaming products to reduce (massively) the grind from taking YEARS to get the top ships down to taking a couple months of casual play.
Don't kid yourself if you think a grinds will keep populations in 2017.. Won't happen. Sure, you have a few unemployed people or kids that have the time to grind, but the rest of us? Forget it.

Gear progression has to be measured and reasonable.. On Live it was not.navis wrote:Live server was the best example of currencies being totally out-of-control..

Also it is smart IMO to have multiple progression paths for 'similar' competitive gear. Rift broke this, either you had PVP gear and could PVP to the exclusion of people even in high end raid gear. Or you had raid gear and were stuck raiding because the raid gear lacked the 'single stat' that made you viable in PVP.. No wonder Rift is dead.
IMO if you have a XYZ ranked PVP gear, you need to provide a 'alternate' path to at least competitive gear of similar quality. On live that progression was broken because the best gear was restricted to one avenue of obtaining it. Right now I think the balance is pretty good because you CAN compete in Ruin gear. So either you grind out PVP or you grind out PVE but in the end your gear is fairly similar without too much of a gear gap between them.
