[Magus] What makes a good Magus?

So I remember playing Magus on live for a little bit but I never really got the hang of it.
I believe that ranged careers are my calling so I'm ready to give this career another chance.
But before I do, I'd very much like to ask for your input as to what the heck I'm supposed to do?

Magi are RDPS - I'm supposed to cause pain, death and destruction to my enemies from a distance, got it!
But AFAIK Magus and Engineers are both referred to as "Utility RDPS". Well, what does that really mean and how do I apply it in-game?

I mainly played a Sorcerer on live so I'd appreciate if perhaps someone could explain some contrasts between the two!

Thanks in advance!

Utility rdps in terms of the fact that in GROUP play i.e 6v6 magus is really only good for rifting people

because otherwise in terms of damage and stuff you dont put out anywhere as much dps as a sorc and while you can do lots of AoE, a lot of your dots can easily be cleansed

so magus is not that great for 6 mans but might be changed down the line with buffs, like the stagger magus has got buffed from 3 to 5s

for solo play the class is good at 1v1

lol pull spec in 6 vs 6 is completly useless.....
Magus need the 39 (Deamon Withering) tactic to be viable in small scale it's pretty much the only utillity the class have for smaller scale. Engies atleast get a armor debuff combined with the same tactic that makes em slighty better. Engie is however not as good in larger scale combat as Magus.
A well placed Deamon Infestation can turn the tide of a battle for sure. But in small scale were there's not as much dmg output the stagger might aswell be just a free immunity timer. ST knockdowns with healdebuffs is by far the best route for small scale. Magus have neither. So unless you planning on playing alot of large scale RVR the class is pretty lackluster especially pre r39.

Lol. Fine I'll be helpful. The magus class was excellent 1v1 on live after rr100 and op pocket items were introduced. Any class can solo another class, it just depends how smart your opposition is. I don't foresee magus being good at 1v1 here (no TB for one). Any healer worth a salt will be able to wreck you, most mdps will kill you (you may kill them with your dots if they don't pot, but you'll be dead so who cares). You can maw/snare and use your short knockback to gain some ground and dot up the person. As far as 6v6, you are a rift bot. Zerg wise magus is fun because you can put out some decent aoe, but a sorc will be overall due to their mechanic and added utility. Tl;dr don't expect to be a sorc or you'll hate the class. So, like large scale orvr? The magus is fine.

Magus and Engineer played the "Utility" role before the CC immunity patch hit, after that they played the "gimp af tbh fam" role because they relied so much on being able to **** out CC indiscriminately.

Since then mythic has given them things like the 20% increased damage when near summon to sort of make up for it but not really.

Magus and Engineer are still VERY good and VERY fun in large scale ORvR fighting at keeps and choke points. But they are terrible in small scale fighting and scenarios when going up against any half brained composition because their damage is easily healed through. The only time anyone is afraid of a magus hitting them is when they are in those awful scenarios when there is no healer in their party. The power of healing, guard, and other percent based damage mitigation mechanics like challenge etc... all contribute to the "burst meta" in small scale fighting that magus performs poorly in.

Like renork said, if you are fine with just doing ORvR Magus is a solid choice, but if you are more for smaller scale organized fighting like scenarios you should rethink your choice until they get buffed.

I'll repeat again, "rift bot" isn't viable in 6vs6......
it's good for large scale combat. The Magus will be the highest priority to kill in a 6vs6 fight. Unless you manage to do a 6man with Sorc and Magus then it's the Sorc. So why would you wanna rift their tanks and melee dps into your Magus when you're the nr 1 on the kill list, it just doesn't make any sence.

Oh looks it's roadkillrobin. I'm surprised you didn't post made up numbers on this thread. I'm not going to go back and forth with you :^) think whatever you want.
