More and more people come here and attempt to project professional standards of conduct onto us.

You understand, I am sure, that the only reason one can get a response to repeatedly posting requests for status or updates on a professional forum is because the staff there are contractually obligated to be patient and accomodating, even if the person is an absolute idiot. For the record - I consider this to be a horrible thing. The need for a user to be pro-active about seeking out information before consulting staff is being removed by professional companies in a race to the bottom by training and obliging their support staff to respond painstakingly to even the most inane of queries, because encouraging initiative and proper standards of conduct comes secondary to money. This results in the worst of the bunch coming to places like this and expecting the same standards to be in place.

Well, we at Return of Reckoning do not have that obligation. If I see people failing to use their common sense by repeatedly asking for updates when it is clear and evident to anyone who will think about it that no news means an unchanged situation, I can and I will chew them out. I do this because I am quite confident that deserved beatdowns alienate only the kinds of people who believe that we should be conducting ourselves exactly as they would wish, and that they do not have to think about their actions.

This upsets some people. I suspect the people whom this upsets are exclusively the kinds of people who post the repeated status requests. That's OK. I don't mind. The overwhelming majority of people have been able to understand that repeatedly asking for updates and posting topics about the situation is not helping, and it's only annoying the staff members who are having to respond. We have more than enough frustration to be dealing with in trying to sort this issue out. People who are not willing to think just add to that.

To put this in a more technical way: This is an event-driven system. It is not a polling-based system. When an event happens, we will notify you. We will not notify you to state that the situation is unchanged - that is what "no response" is for. We do not need you to poll us at intervals for updates either.

To avoid this issue, I've added the huge banner that I had to add to the tech and game support forums to the GD. If anything changes, it will be in that banner. If anyone decides to ignore that banner and post a status request... well, I'm sorry, but they were warned and they were warned in a fashion that is impossible to miss.
Your logic is most certainly undeniable. I suppose I simply operate under a different modus operandi. I'll leave the matter be as it is of course within your power as a volunteer for a private server to conduct community relations as you best see fit.

I had a Scottish (Glaswegian) friend who once described me as a "molly-coddler" and I don't think I could disagree. I am the kind of person who creates cooperation between people in whatever manner possible as I believe that nothing good can come from hostile relationships with one's social surroundings. To that end, I am willing to put up with a great many things that other people are not, and so I can understand the frustration that is common among the RoR team. Ignorance is common among the users here, but ignorance is the default human state and will remain so indefinitely. Instead of a misanthropic response to this information, I have realigned my perspective in acceptance of what people are, in all their glory and all their faults.

Negativity also incites negativity as a social response mechanism, and vice versa.

TL;DR: I understand why you guys do what you do. It just makes me a bit sad.

Ignorance is the base state of Humanity, until they learn how to learn. If the answer is RIGHT THERE and you still don't know it, that's on you. Giving them the answer wont help that person at all. Since if they can't figure that out, then they will continue to not figure out the real basic **** until someone forces them to actually do it themselves. Then they might have a chance or realizing how to learn on their own.

People assume they can say whatever they want, and the Dev/GM/admin community has to take it, and be super polite to every thread they post in. Negatory Ghost Rider. My advice? treat the GMs like a cop. Yes, you speak with general politeness because they can and will put you on the ground if they want too. No need to kiss their ass or be all fake, cause they really don't care. Just don't start any ****, don't be a total ****, don't break any rules, and you'll be just fine.

Lastly... Is that supposed to be Numeral's ticked off or a picket-fence?

For anyone not regularly hanging around on the server, I don't think it's as blatantly obvious as the staff and some others seem to think it is. The latest news is/was on Twitter --a medium not well-advertised at all on the forum-- and for some reason wasn't copy/pasted to Latest News. This exchange highlights ppl's confusion:

That's just the date it was originally posted, but it's updated regularly.

Can see your point though, it does look like old news.
It was even worse when the 'Online' app thing was broken (yep, I know that apparently couldn't be fixed/changed for ages).

The forum banners are exactly the kind of thing that's actually useful, not scraps of info in various threads.
.......

@DeusMechanicus Since you've got no open support (only disagreement) for those posts, I feel obliged to say I largely agree with you. "Project[ing] professional standards [onto the staff]" is a strawman, since what you were advocating, and respect in general, doesn't require being in a professional role. Aggressive responses are rarely, if ever, helpful, and implying that they're written because they're 'deserved' or with the intention of helping people to become more proactive or learn on their own is, imo, disingenous; far more likely that they simply stem from (totally understandable) irritation. That's more a question of personal standards and beliefs though; it seems yours and mine are more closely aligned than they are with the staff's (which is fine).

This thread (viewtopic.php?f=8&t=15782) is a good example: It would've been preferable, in my opinion, to lock it after Druin's post (or, actually, Bowldancer's which actually provided useful info); I consider the latter two totally unnecessary, especially considering the fact that the OP was perfectly polite (as they are in their (very short) post history) and was wondering if it was an issue on his/her end.

P.S. I wasn't originally gonna bother posting since I can understand the staff's and others' irritation - I feel it myself sometimes when I see the nth thread asking the same thing - and didn't want to seem like I was getting at them (again). But it felt 'wrong', if that makes sense, not to say anything now that someone else has piled on.

(Edit reason: grammar)

Thanks for the thread, I just know I signed up yesterday and was wondering why I was having issues, some of the threads are as old as 2014 so it took me til finding this one to finally realize what was going on.

Thanks for the info

Regarding that other topic, the OP got the response he did because he lied.

The addition of the banner to the General Discussion forum may have been recent, but the Support forums have been locked and banners in place within for about 3 days or so. The OP broadly stated that he had looked everywhere. In fact, he had not looked in the support forums, which should be the first port of call to anyone with a technical issue. If he had indeed looked within either forum or any thread within (as the banner is subforum-wide) then he would clearly have seen that the server is down and so any connection issue topics are not welcome.

IN ADDITION to this, the homepage shows the server as offline, both in the tracker and in the news posts below.

The blatant lie is why I let rip... if you can call what I said letting rip.

I should note that the topic was locked before my post. I'm not blocked by a lock so I sometimes post through them without realizing it.
