My abilities are near 0 to answer that. I will get some infos about it, but as far i know ddos doesn't exploit anything. To make a simple image, a DDOS attack works like a ram. You can hit a keep door with your single chosen and nothing will happen (usual login use) or use ram and the door will fall. DDOS flood connections and saturate everything, nothing else.
I think a better way to put it is more like...

Lets say you're trying to enter your house. You are in a scifi world, so you punch a keycode into your panel and you enter your home. Hooray!

Now when a DDOS happens, you and FIVE HUNDRED OTHER PEOPLE attempt to all punch one keypad at the same time. You can't make it to your keypad since all the people are in the way. The house is "overloaded" with so many people and can't handle them all. So no one gets to use the "house".

The house in this case is the server. You are the person who is trying to enter the house. The extra people are the "bots" from the botnet that are overloading the server.

I think the important thing is not an ETA but,

Does the team actually know how to fix the problem?.

This would ease alot of worries, including mine. I agree it no use on providing an eta, especially if you're just in a trial and error phase. But youre getting peoples hopes up. It needs to be said if you guys know how to fix it or not.

If this is what you mean,
.

they used a DDOS attack to drop security, then execute remote code to gain access.

That particular attack does require some insider knowledge. its notoriously hard to actually gain full directory access without some kind of help (OR Poor security procedure implementation),

Yes.

Does everyone on the team? For most of us, this isn't our job.

This is one of those aspects of the server that are very much dependent on a select few people. They have spent every free night grinding away at it and continuous posts like this certainly don't do much for their desire.

There seems to be a number of people who are posting with a sense of entitlement and who come across as rather insulting to the ROR team. For one, you have contributed nothing to the project and are owed nothing. The simple statement of "Server is down and we are working on it" should be all you need to know. Also, I'll remind you this team is sure to be highly skilled as they have managed to deliver a private server which in itself is no easy task so stop questioning their abilities. This isn't their job.... they have other obligations outside of making sure the server gets sorted so give them a bloody break. It embarrassing to see how many people can be so ungrateful for what the ROR team are doing. Show them a bit of gratitude and have some bloody patience.

I just want to say thanks to all the people who are investing their time in this game for us ! All those who are crying because they can't play, or are criticizing the RoR "Staff" because the server is not up should just shut up and launch their own project ... Let's see how good you are ! The players who really love this game will come back, the rest can just go and play something else if they are not happy! Some people really have some nerves to cry and criticize.

I remember the first time i came on this site and realised i may be able to play the game again, i wished it for some time, and there it was. And even if the game doesn't come back online, i would still be greatfull for the time i was able to play again.

Anyway, you don't need to apologize for having some harsh responses to some users who can't read !
You're nice enough to answer and set up a forum, so if some can't use it, tough luck, go back to school, maybe playing RoR isn't your biggest concern right now !

Take your time guys, we want to play, but we want you to know that some of us understand you, some of us also have lives, children, and jobs. On the other hand, some people think that you owe them something.... I wish i could be rude to them because they deserve it, but I won't :)

So again, thanks to all the people who spend free time on this game for them, but for us also.
