I see what you mean, WAR is everywhere! At least in my Steam library.
There's a Warhammer mod for Medieval 2: TW called Beginning of the End Times, it helps with the cravings. They are to release a crucial patch soon cutting a lot of the bugs and CTDs out of it.
Battlefleet Gothic is pretty good. And Blood Bowl 2 helps too =D

Re: Seeing Warhammer everywhere.
I still remember when GW hired Blizzard to make a game based on Warhammer lore. Things did not work out, GW pulled out.
Blizzard re did some of the artwork and released the game as World of Warcraft!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure we're talking about the original Warcraft from, what, 1994? The art style, unit variety, and overall theme, was pretty much there from the beginning of the game series. Especially by Warcraft II, which had the Alliance already have its mix of Dwarves, Elves and Humans as opposed to the Horde of Orcs and Goblins.drmordread wrote:I still remember when GW hired Blizzard to make a game based on Warhammer lore. They go even further with Starcraft in terms of how similar it is to W40k. The only thing that stops it is lack of Orks, and that Terran culture is nothing like Imperial culture.
Re: Seeing Warhammer everywhere.
Blizzard stealing stuff from other properties is no surprise. Their entire franchise is based on whatever they could cobble together from elsewhere. But they make subtle changes so they couldn't be sued. And Blizzard fans WILL zealously defend against any such claims. To them, Blizzard invented fantasy.
Re: Seeing Warhammer everywhere.
One guy at Blizzard Entertainment hoped to get the Warhammer fantasy license for the game that was later known as "Warcaft - Orcs & Humans" (1994). They never obtained it.
GW didn't hire Blizzard at any time to make a video game. The Warcraft lore is heavily "inspired" by the WH fantasy lore, as Blizzard employees stated in the past.
WoW fanboys/-girls often claim it's vice versa (the first WH fantasy tabletop edition is from 1983).
But with only a licence from GW and without any own built franchise, WoW would probably not exist.

Everyone does that. Inspiration is just a more subtle form of theft, and all creativity is the result of amalgamation, to varying extents, of what we've experienced into a new whole.Wlarius wrote:Blizzard stealing stuff from other properties is no surprise. I was going to offer StarCraft as an example, but then I remembered about Zerg and Tyranids.

It's sort of a limited scope from that competing theory of the universe that contrary to revolving around the Sun or the Earth, the universe revolves around them. And why not, they're looking out from their own perspective.Azarael wrote:Everyone does that. What I mean though is that to them, WoW was their first experience with immersion in a fantasy world so it means a lot to them and they felt the growth of it and its place in pop culture history personally. The fact that it technically wasn't the first is irrelevant because it was the first for them and their generation.
For example, personally, I was born too early to appreciate Harry Potter, but early enough to appreciate Star Wars when it was just the Original Trilogy. I'll never entirely understand how personally that generation feel connected to Harry Potter, but they'll never know how it felt in the 80s and 90s to be a Star Wars fan at the time. Technically Star Wars was the original big blockbuster, but they experienced Harry Potter firsthand as a part of it.
So hey. It's cool.

Star Wars Galaxies still brings back the most feels for me (Pre-CU). Me and my bro - 13 and 11 respectively - going around in our swoop bikes trying to avoid Mutant Rancors brings back the emotions.
