What software would interfere with it?

Antivirus and anti-malware programs. Something like Spybot S&D, CCcleaner and similar.

Edit: Also simplified, a VPN is a service that routes your connection through a different location on the globe than the one you are originally connecting from. Your connection simply takes a different path. Usually the decent speed ones need to be paid for (although there are free ones) and some have dedicated programs so you don't have to enter all the info manually in your connection settings.

So for example, IObit Malware fighter would stop it? can it be turned back on after the game is connected? I'd rather not wind up with my security turned off while online.

Just test it and see if it's interfering with the game. If it is you can go on figuring out how to solve the issue but at least you'll know what the culprit is.

Aaaand....rather fortunately(or perhaps not i guess) that wasn't the issue.

This is really leaving me stumped, I don't know what could be causing this.

Your best bet is making a thread of your own detailing exactly what's wrong and what have you tried in order to solve it. Otherwise it's gonna be tough to help you. Then you just need a little patience and trial and error. Gl!
