So... I've been reading these forums allot. I've delved even into long buried topics of the past.
What I noticed was that not everyone here has a nice time with their fps and lagg.
What got me to write this is seeing people deciding not to group because their performance isn't on par with others, mostly because of the low fps they get from their low-end riggs.
I was there. I know how it feels. I still don't own super strong machine but it's enough to provide me maxed-out gaming experience here and solid fps while recording.
I will post few stuff I wrote on Rift's forum and it got widely accepted with over 10k views and people PMing me ingame to thank me for the fps boost they gained.
Rift is gone for me long ago but I left that topic there for the sake of community which gave me some memorable moments.
So lets get started:
A. Building up your fps before you launch the game.
This is where 90% of people I talked to goes wrong.
Everyone thinks that if you just drag sliders to lowest possible settings that you will magically gain 25-30fps boost.
It does NOT go that way.
This is what you simply must do if you want to feel the change when you enter the game:

If you are not able to get playable fps for grouping up with others I assume your RAM is very low. Free a solid chunk of it by doing this. No excuses pls, just do it:
- Get some PC tuning software.
- After you got it, max out your PC performance regardless of visual looks. Hit the 100% of what software you got is suggesting you to do. (tune up utilities shines in this aspect, will make your PC run like Ferrari)
- You will notice your windows is looking *beeeep*, but who gives a *beeeep*. You need good fps, not a fancy desktop look.
(all those fancy little thingies actually eat your RAM out, disable them ALL in case something is left untouched by your tuning software)

Now onto next step.
Download free little magical piece of software called Smart Close.
Use it and it will close most, if not all, background running processes in matter of seconds. Sometimes it can actually leave couple of processes untouched, but it will still save you allot of time doing the next step.

Smart Close did his share but you still have some processes running and eating your precious low amount of RAM
Here is what you do to provide some extra memory for application you are gonna run (in this case RoR):
- press Ctrl+Alt+Delete

I suggest you to close even the explorer.exe, as it was highest RAM consuming process after you closed every other one.
You will be left out with black screen but don't worry, everything your PC requires for safe operation is still there. You are just not able to see it.
Ok so it's all done and you wanna run the game but all you see is black screen.
How to run RoR now, you wonder? Here is how:

1. press ctrl+alt+delete
2. go on Applications tab
3. click on New task
4. find RoR Launcher
5. click OK
After RoR starts do following:
1.press alt+tab
2. close RoR Launcher
3. press alt+tab again
B. Now you are finaly in game. Lets see what we can do here:

First thing to do is to find screen resolution and UI scale that can fit your needs as gamer AND provide solid fps.
Do NOT be a douche and think that you MUST play on some uber high resolution to experience what game has to offer.
I played games on resoultions that would blow your mind and I'm still playing on rather low resolution consider my PC config.
But idgaf as long as my UI looks good and my fps is rock solid while I'm recording.

Next thing to do is to disable shadows (who needs them anyway... this is 1st game where I actually have it ON)

I also suggest removing any overhead names you really don't need, in case you really want to squeeze as much performance boost as you can.

5. Try how it works
6. If you are not happy tweak some other stuff in performance settings to see what nets you best fps. Draw distance can play major role in fps gains too, but really sucks if you gotta lower it at least under the half of the slider. Try to get playable fps without hitting the bottom of draw distance. Post Processing is solid fps consumer too. Tick it off in case you are not happy with the current fps gains.
Most important part is resolution settings + UI scale.
Also, take in consideration that there is so much addons that can make you UI look awesome despite the resolution you are running in. However, there are some addons that will actually work against your fps, so do some research before you install it. Enemy addon is most recommended community as one that doesn't affect performance. I can also suggest Pure addon, as I haven't noticed any significant performance loss while using it.
Ohh one more thing.
Blaqwar wrote this amazing article even back in retail days of WAR. Be sure to check it out as it's still very much viable info.
After you close RoR and want your windows menus back do the following:
1. press ctrl+alt+delete
2. press new task
3. type in explorer.exe
4. run it
5. BOOM
Basically that's it.
Not a rocket science but in Rift many people found it useful. I just adapted it to RoR in hopes to reach those in need.
