I stumbled upon RoR last week after lamenting the current state of MMORPGs in general. “I miss my witch elf”, I thought.
Naturally, I read about how the game was in a limited "alpha" state....so I wasn't expecting the full experience when I logged in. After being extremely impressed with the character creation process, I think the first thing that struck me upon logging into the game world were the things that AREN'T working.
"Hmm, that mob is glitched."
"Hmm, this quest is glitched."
"Aw man, public quests don't work?"
But yknow what? After having spent a few days in the game....questing, pvping, exploring, observing the community....it's really quite cool what is going on here.
After initially being a little bummed about the stuff that wasn’t (yet) working, I find myself now BLOWN AWAY by how much IS working. That this game is being rebuilt from the ground up, not by a paid team of devs, but just by “regular folks”……mind boggling.
And there’s a neat dynamic within the player community as well. Before I logged in, I wondered “how can you sustain a game where you can’t go above level 12? How can you keep people’s interest?”
Well, I have found out how. It’s not what I expected.
What players are doing is treating level 12 as a hard cap, just like level 60 in vanilla WoW, or 40 in WAR, and they are wholeheartedly embracing the min/maxing that naturally occurs once the cap is attained.
“What is BIS???” is a question that we are all familiar with, but one I wasn’t really expecting to hear at level 12. Makes perfect sense though. Players aren’t treating this like a public test server for a game being rebuilt. They are treating it like an MMORPG with a level cap of 12, as if that was the plan all along.
To go right along with that mentality, every time the developers release an update, it’s met with the same type of reception that a big content patch would be. The prevailing response seems to be “YAY! New content!” , rather than “it’s about time you guys fixed XYZ!”
I find that to be quite refreshing. I love that we’re given a bunch of character slots, because I plan on leveling a bunch of alts =) and when the time comes that things start to feel a little stale….I can just take a break and keep an eye on my twitter alerts for new updates!
Thanks so much to everyone who is spending so many hours on this project. It is appreciated!
There's a really neat dynamic in RoR
