Optimal build would be something that supports your playstyle. Are you a long range sniper or mid range kiter? Do you like to get up and personal or shut down enemy casters? When jumped, do you fight your way out or do you try to outrun and bleed them out? What makes the game fun for you?
Those are the questions you should be asking when building for yourself. Then you know what you can and cannot do and be useful in a party (swapping one or two skills and tactics to match you and your friends line up is guaranted). Alternatively you can pick up a build on forum or from /ad and modify it to suit your needs (also a guarantee as you lvl up and match your build to a better gear). Play to the class strengths and don't try to make it into something it's not supposed to be and you'll be fine. Besides, you can always tune and rebuild, it's free now. And in my experience RoR is filled with people that will help you when you ask them.
Optimal warband build on the other hand - don't worry, join good pvp guild and they'll help you equip and build your class to fit both you and their line up
