An hour chat ban because I emoted (/facepalmed) a magus who disconnected multiple times in the middle of myself and other order killing him?
Multiple witnesses. Multiple offenses.
Uncool.
Is it normal to get muted in chat for calling out obvious crashers?

I doubt it was the facepalm. There is a non-zero chance you used some common gamer slang in a time proximate way that got you muted. For example, once I got muted for stating that our group just had sex with multiple partners when a warband of Destro came along and crushed us (rhymes with hanged) and that resulted in a hour mute.
The filters are, lets say, over-tuned. It is dumb. But on the other hand they are the result of some truly vile and toxic behavior by some folks that left unchecked would be worse. So it is probably another example of "this is why we can't have nice things".

Insulting other players is a TOS violation, so a fair amount of words used explicitly to insult someone are on the list. It wasn't an emote.
Filters are only applied to public chat. If you want to use spicy language, keep it to guild/party among like-minded people, and be aware that players can still report you in private chat.
Also fwiw, we don't take action on disconnects. It was probably on purpose, but sometimes it's not, and that gray area is enough to not consider it a violation. You get a chat message when we think it might be on purpose, but that's all.

Thank you kindly for the reply wargrimnir (love your work). Is it possible to find out what word I used? Even send it as a private message? Is there a list of "naughty words"?
I am Australian, and I fear some of those naughty words are conversational here. Oops and sorry... for having awesome beaches!

I would like to have nice things, and am OK playing by the rules, but its nice to know what are the rules, and where the goal posts are.
Keep on being a positive role model to all elves. (and hummies and dorfs)

The way the system works with the one hour mute is that all messages are scanned in real time before being passed through the server and back to the client. Whatever the last message you typed before you got muted will contain the word. There isn't a delay, it will literally prevent you from putting it into chat and mute you at that moment.
That should help narrow it down. We don't have a list of published words, we don't intend to.

Honestly... I'm glad this system is in place preventing me from actually getting banned for calling people names in SC. 11/10
