Returning player questions

Hey guys, I'm returning to the game after a long break and starting a new character. I was debating on dps zealot as I like healing but also wanted to throw a bit of dmg but I think it's in a bad spot? My 2nd thought was squigherder or magus as I like pet classes but I'm not sure how impactful the pets are or is most dmg coming from the player? I'm thinking something like necro from daoc is what I'm shooting for.

On another note, how long does it take to get geared up at the higher rr? I'm wondering if it's gonna be a long time to be relevant vs ppl who've been playing forever.

Also, anyone have good builds for all 3?

Hey mate— I'm not a destro player here, so I can't advise you too much on career choices, but I do know that the pet pathing for Squig and WL is a bit messed up.

You'd be fine with a Magus as the pets are stationary.

Frankly— you should prepare for a big grind to get your end-game gear. Full Sov (the End-game stuff) is about 8,000 War Crests which is a significant amount and will take quite a bit of time to acquire.

So strap in and learn to enjoy the journey as quickly as you can as otherwise you might be disatisfied.

Works towards acquire your Wards as you level up.

Cheers mate, and good luck. Here if you've got more questions and I hope someone can help you out with builds etc.

Dps zealot
Pro - Killing people on a build that most have considered it as a meme for ages now.
Cons - You will probably have to play a healer until you have the gear that makes dps zealot work. Haven't tried this spec recently myself but I heard more people talking about it not being a meme build anymore. Being in certain situations that you're one of the few classes that can heal but you choose to dps and follow destro players are just falling over due to lack of healing. Its fairly often in the pug world that scenarios one side would have healers and the other side doesn't.

Melee squigherder
Pro - Great aoe class that is well suited for warbands, very simple rotation.
Con - Single target is not the best and probably not very easy to solo roam on.

Ranged squigherder
Pros - I would say this is probably one of the best solo to 6 man class, it can be a little annoying to mange your pet all the time but its a small price to pay for a class that one of the strongest ranged classes currently.
Con - probably wont be wanted in much content about 6 man stuff due to very limited aoe. Can be a pretty squishy class.

As for gearing up it really depends on your win rate in rvr and scenarios. You can generally spend your warcrests while levelling to unlock wards and just upgrading gear, but once you're 40, I would suggest saving your crests and getting gear upgrades via pve. Yes full sov does cost a lot but very few classes run full sov these days, mostly classes will mix 2 sets triumphant/sov or triumphant/warlord. The first powerful set of gear you can get is the keepers set and that's from the city dungeons and you should be able to run that from 16-20.
Once 40 I would try to focus on Gunbad for Redeye > City dungeons for Sentinel > Bastion stairs for Bloodlord and that should get you all the wards needed for endgame gear.

While levelling you might feel really strong and overpowered but when you hit 40 and play with the big boys who has taken the time to masters their class and have knowledge of how to beat certain classes you will find it pretty difficult but you can check the killboard and see that players who aren't bis geared and renown rank 80 and still being competitive.
