Greetings,
Long story short, I am an 40+, Warhammer fantasy universe fan. As kid I played a lot of WFRP with my friends, as well as Dark Omen on PC, and recently enjoyed Total War Warhammer. I am glad that this server survived despite closing the original game. Created account this week and played some few hours. But I really can't get used with the controls and game dynamic. When a scrum begins, everything is chaos as players just running, jumping and casting dozens of sells at once. I can't even recognize foes from allies. Like humans, elves and marauders can look similar fom a distance. How on earth Am I suppose to look at the screen, switch targeting between friend and foe, be in a constant move, asses the tactical situation while at the same time using 10+ keys and mouse rotations? Am I the only one with such issues? Tried to watch some Youtube videos and feel ashamed when veteran players are constantly moving while literally firing 20 abilities at once.
Any advise how can I enjoy this game and stay somehow usefull for a giuld or friendly warband?
Regards

Re: How to enjoy this...or should I rage quit ?
Some basics.
The enemy players have red name plates. It should be obvious just looking a them in red. At a distance it's sometimes not as obvious, but when you mouse over them, your cursor should change from a select icon to an attack icon.
Order rides horses or gyrocopters. Destruction rides lizards, disks, wolves, black horses. Should be easy to see from a distance by their gait.
You need to find good keybindings. It's going to be an evolving process as you change them, which is an ongoing process, especially if you aren't rank 40. Personally my forward key is "E", left/right strafe is "W"/"R", and I turn with my mouse only All other keys are around them. I changed this from the typical WASD and it's better long term. Important abilities are on my mouse buttons, even using shift with them.
There are lots of great addons to use, but someone will have a good list. You need good addons especially if you are tank or a healer.
Tank is the hardest role in the game, followed by healer. All classes need skill to play their best. Experience counts and there have been people at rank 16+ that have played for years, they have both character experience, map experience, and gear. If you are leveling, scenarios will be more fair and helpful to learn about your class than rvr. Once you hit rank 40 it's going to suck (no more boost), but becomes better at about 55, just try to learn as much as possible.
I think just time will help. There are a lot of nuances to the game, which make it really interesting and fun.

Use tab to select enemies, also there is "select closest hostile" key in options. Also, if you point mouse on someone, you will see if its friend or foe.
About using abilities, you don't need to actually select ability out of 20 each time- select which ability, or sequence (rotation) of abilities, do you need for each situation. For example, when you see opponents far away, you possibly want to put short duration buffs on yourself- such as hots, stat buff, etc. Then you want to use specific first ability- for example, snare on a lot of classes. Then you want to use for example several debuffs, in preselected order. Or for example on classes like sorcerer or bright wizard, they usually start from spamming around Chillwind/ Ignite (ability with no cd, and which with tactic also debuffs your opponent's resistance) while looking for the right target, and then execute specific rotation of abilities to hit the target with timestamped burst.
Basically, the idea is to think which abilities you use when, before you actually join combat, and then use preselected ability/ abilities rotation per situation. Of cause, it is also recommended to read guides on your specific class subforum, how to build your specific class, and which abilities to use when, and in which rotation.

You can turn off friendly name plates in the settings.
This should greatly advance your view because only enemies have red names above them.

Re: How to enjoy this...or should I rage quit ?
play chars with few buttons to focus on the important stuff (trying to understand all the chaos)
Zealot/rp or dok/WP as healers or a chosen/kotbs are quite effective even with 2-5 buttons

Not anymore.

Now everybody rides:
Horses (the LOTD ones), manticores, wyverns, pigs, goats, unicorns, pegasus, stags, bears, even Khorne Juggernauts! and since the last event, skeletal horses...

Couple of points.
If you are having trouble figuring out the combat mechanics travel into one of the PVE zones and fight a few mobs. There are Public Quest all over the place with plenty of NPC's standing around. You can practice fighting against single or multiple targets. Granted, this type of combat isn't the same as PvP combat but that isn't my point. My point is just to get familiar with your abilities and rotations in a reduced pressure environment.
As for your second concern, once in a Guild there will be no shortage of people willing to tell you exactly how they want you to play your toon, down to the most minute detail. Warbands are fine, if you like hot Blob on Blob action.

Fix a decent GUI.
You can use FiskUI, it requires a bit of setting up, but if you have the patience to paint Warhammer figurines for hours fixing a UI should be simple.
VinyUI is another common GUI that I believe is a bit simpler to set up but imho have some graphical short comings.
You don't need to press ten buttons and fire them off at the same time. Most careers use 5-8 buttons and there's an add-on called sequencer that allows you to build a rotation.
Start with a healer or a tank, early game they are more relaxed careers and should help you identify friend from foe.
Tanks and healers also will force you to learn positioning which a lot of pure DPS players never seem to learn so that is another benefit of playing tanks/healers.

All players have the same 1.5s global cooldown, so it's impossible to use 20 abilities at once. There's no other way to get good but to practice. It's all about muscle memory. Every time I return to LoL I feel absolutely overwhelmed by how much is going on the screen at once but after a while, adjust. It's the same with RoR. Muscle memory, adjustment.
The most important thing is gear. Make sure you always have good gear for your level. Also, some classes are naturally harder to play than others. Like, def tank is going to be easier than witch hunter, because he's supported by the group, tanky and largely ignored by the enemy. While WH is squishy, often solo, high priority target and is expected to go against other solo/small scale players, who generally know what they are doing and have great equipment, overwise they wouldn't be soloing.
RDPS is easier than MDPS. BW is harder than SW. Things like that.

Re: How to enjoy this...or should I rage quit ?
You have to remember that moster players have played this game for a long, long time.
A few hours is nothing in the world od MMOs.
With that said, start by doin PvE to get to know the controls and to position your toon.
Do scenarios to fight players in a smaller context.
Start a couple of different toons and try them in T1 rvr to see what they are like. And dont be afraid to fail or die. Just go again
And dont ragequit, there is a reason the game is still around. Its really, really fun!
