Poll: What Is Your Goal in RvR?

Killing above all else. I don’t care how the zones end, and if I join a siege, it’s only to get more kills.

Killing matters to me, but I want my realm to win the zone, and I support sieges even if that means not getting kills.

What Is Your Goal in RvR?

Good afternoon, guys!

I’m bringing up a conversation I’ve been having lately with many guildmates, and I’d like to know how the rest of the players on both sides feel about it.

What is your purpose/goal when you play RvR?
  • Killing just for the sake of killing
  • Playing to make your realm win the zone(s)
If you can, please expand on your answer by replying to this post :D

I can't help but feel these options do not accurately express what it is I get out of the lakes.

It's not about just killing. It's not about just sieging. It's not about just winning the zone, or even a mix of that. If you take all these in a vaccuum, I could explain the importance of each individual aspect to you, but none of these explanations would be successful at expressing what's actually important.

What's actually important to me, is getting the feeling that two sides are stubbornly fighting a war with utmost fervor and passion. I want to feel like I'm gritting my teeth even if the lakes are not favorable for my realm today, and fighting to the last breath. I want to feel like the enemy does the same. To achieve this, kills are important, sieges are important, defending sieges is important, winning zones is important, but the most important thing is feeling the struggle, whether from the enemy when my realm has an advantage, or from myself, when theirs does. I would like to know that both sides are doing everything in their power to win, and perhaps in an ideal, unrealistic world, that doesn't result in one side getting comepletely stomped, nor does it require for any side to hold back to avoid that. I want people to care enough about this WAR of ours to resist out of sheer spite, and to fight to the bitter end, whether they win or lose, then do it all over again.

And I hope that this will be the state of ROR one day.

==================
But to return down to something specific:
I will however say that sieges feel too slow to me sometimes; and that's primarily because 99% of the time, those who are under siege just sit inside and wait for the door to go down, and do not attempt to actively interact with the ram or such. So because of that, I enjoy open fights more, which I guess lands me in the camp of "killing".

I Voted for the top one, in lack of better options.
But please allow me to ellaborate.

I care mostly about "fighting" not really killing. Because a kill can be anything, killboard killcount can be 24vs1 guy. or it can be 300 vs 300 doing M2 Ambush turn-based gameplay. To me, those are kinda boring fights. Its good progression for those that need it sure, but the quality is kinda low.

What keeps me logging in is trying to find rvr gameplay where panning around looking for inc, possitioning your healers away from where the deathball is coming to, having overview of which flank is winning, or doing cooldown management of saving morale advantage as you clean up one fight and know the next fight is rolling in.
its largescale, its unballanced its war. Thats why I perfer rvr to scenarios, scenarios could give me fighting and buttonpressing on demand but it doesnt have the same sense to me. Mostly due to objectives also not mattering much in the scenarios, the same kill-only mindset have festered there for years now. Winning by score, is not important and usuall a "new comer trap" honestly.

At the same time as I am part of the problem, I also dream of being part of the solution. A quick reminder to anyone leading warbands in RvR. if you get the BO buffs its aaaalmost like having a 2x event going on for kill rp gains if you get 3-4 BO stacks. Go to the Manor BO more often in Praag, dont only go to MS! The game atm have very little incentive to De-blob after a realm got outnumbered and you counterblob to not be purely outnumbered. Rememer to go get your BO bufs and try to deescalate the blob so its not just turn-based trench back and forth fights.

As for zonelocks, and the campaign. I just dont feel attached to it after Citysieges got "removed" in value from Sove gear. We can say what we want, but we went from 10 instances in the early morning to barely 1 instance in primetime as the gear incentive got removed. Not enough players cared about the "instanced fighting" because its not fun being trapped in a predetermined outcome instance. But they stuck it out for the bis rewards. We need citysiges to mattering again somehow, to make a ripple effect of careing about fort wins and the campaign progressing!
Right now I dont give a F if Order is up +7 forts or if destro is, it doesnt even land on my radar when the next city siege is because the gameplay in there is no longer fun when majority of the server dont care about it. I dont mind careing about the campaign again, but im not magically got artificially find realmpride in a roleplay guild (again) to care about Empire zones, just because the game took a wrong turn and made the zonelocks kinda boring and pointless.

Fix the campaign and make it meaningful, and ill have a ram in my inventory. Untill then no thanks ill look for manuvers in rvr, not for killboard, but for the fun of it.

Aside from providing a source for Warcrest, nothing.

As has been discussed on numerous occasions as part of the Tothmonra RoR Podcast over the years, both City Sieges and Fortress assaults are completely irrelevant in context of earning gear. In fact, in my opinion City Sieges are now the most irrelevant content in the entire game. I ran a Tier 2 PVE quest the other day and had more fun than during my last City instance. At least while running a quest you have a goal other than just waiting for events to play out which were predetermined prior to the fight even starting.

As for the poll initiated by the OP, good deal, well done. The voice of the people is the voice of God. But my answer to the question 'what is my goal in RvR' is, to play Scenarios.

Zones are stale, keep takes are stale, and capping BOs only helps to draw in small man groups to fight.

Small scale fights are amazing but the push fir blobs has made the game quite boring. They typically fight over one BO and in front of war camps. Put that on repeat 24hrs and then, maybe they go for a keep when there is 40% or more in disparity. At that point, everyone just ports out of keep. Then its blob vs. A dead on arrival keep.

Fun and Progression are my two main aims

The fun comes from the combat, and from chatting with guildies. But the combat is only fun when its comparatively small scale and relatively balanced. I'd rather have a 6v6 fight or a 1v1 that I lose, than win a 12v6 or something similar. I'm a big believer that the most fun comes from facing "achievable challenges" - I know I'm gonna have to push myself, I gonna have to play well, it'll be fairly intense. If I win, I'll be satisfied, if I lose it'll push me to get better but at least I'll have had fun.

On the progression side, the motivation comes from two sources. One is a sense of having something concrete to show for my time: gear, crests, renown. The other is a sense that I'm getting better as a player.

Fighting for keeps and zones comes into the progression side, because winning a zone gets me more crests and renown. But I dont enjoy keep fights at all, they're rarely fun, so they're not something i tend to actively push.

This is closest to what I feel, I like the Realm vs Realm part of it, combined with the other stuff. What draws me to this game, and what made me love DAOC aswell. Hard to nail down in a vote-option.
