Who told you Taunt reduces enemy damage?Aethilmar wrote:Quite. Although technically it is renown for reducing damage through taunts, challenges and guarding since it is akin to actually healing someone.Penril wrote:Renown for taunting? Is OP serious?
Your tone indicates skepticism. Is there a particular reason you think tanks should not be rewarded for engaging in their core mechanic like other archetypes are?

Re: Renown for tanking activities
Penril, I know your question wasn't directed at me, but when I first came back to RoR, I too could have sworn taunt reduced damage the target dealt if they weren't attacking you, instead of boosting your damage against the target. Either that changed between live and now, or we are both thinking of another game like Rift / SWtoR.
Regarding BO's being able to pull multiple mobs solo, perhaps that improves when we reach higher levels / gear, but right now, I get in a tight spot tanking 2 mobs of equal level, 3 mobs a few levels lower. I was doing a PQ and a Marauder came along, tanked 6+ mobs, never dropped below 50% hp. I understand they are the best "farmers" and I don't have a heal, but damn that's pretty depressing as a tank. I know I don't hit for much, but I should be able to outlast. Using all my buffs / debuffs as well.
For renown gain, I don't have any experience at higher tiers to compare to. I will say though that being an annoyance to the other team as a tank is valuable, beyond just doing CC. If they are focusing you for damage they aren't focusing your squishies. People can abuse damage taken just as well as people can abuse healing (stand in crowd, spam heals on self). I think factoring damage mitigated as a factor would be beneficial. Guard damage and damage reduced by toughness / armor all apply to a tank, and aren't as easily "abused."

Re: Renown for tanking activities
Taunt has never reduced enemy damage. You are confusing it with Challenge.

Re: Renown for tanking activities
That might be it too ^_^. I love having that ability as a tank.
Re: Renown for tanking activities
Actually it did at one point, but they changed it to simply be an interrupt and damage boost which is the most recent form. My bad.Penril wrote:Taunt has never reduced enemy damage. You are confusing it with Challenge.
So that leaves challenge and guarding for getting credit for damage mitigation. Same point as before, unfortunately one less tool with which to work.

Yeah but dps and healers dying a lot compared to tanks that means longer survavibility means more renown. And the system is fine as it is sice renown is fairly shared with the contrinution you do.
Re: Renown for tanking activities
Living longer does not equal more renown.

You are free to do whatever you want but if you will go two hamder with a tank just for dps you should know in warbands it doesnt make a significant chance you will be dying a lot faster without a shield.Roll dps class if you want to damage. There is nnothing unfair in renown bizznezz. And at some point at higher fights you seek renown throu dominating zones..spikespiegel84 wrote:Ok. Re: Renown for tanking activities
As noted just living does not mean you get renown. I can (at least anecdotally) confirm it is much easier to get renown on rdps and heals than as a tank. Healers have it particularly easy. Rdps just slightly less so. Mdps have a rough time up until they get significantly geared and then it becomes easier. There are a lot of underlying factors for this, but bottom line is having brought up multiple characters of each archetype on WAR and now on RoR and tanks need to work harder for their renown in the oRvR phase of the game and arguably so in SCs depending on party compositions....actually totally depending on party compositions.tionblack wrote:Yeah but dps and healers dying a lot compared to tanks that means longer survavibility means more renown. And the system is fine as it is sice renown is fairly shared with the contrinution you do.
But, the "who has it worst" argument aside for a second, it is worth asking why tanks receive no positive feedback in game terms (renown/xp) for doing their archetype job. It was mentioned they do get some advantage in PQs but I am going to dismiss that as irrelevant to a game where almost all progression takes place in SCs and the RvR lakes. And make no mistake this game is about character progression otherwise renown levels would be capped at 40/40 forever and the best gear would be merc/annihilator.
I don't actually expect anything to change (for technical reasons if nothing else), but I figured since the game system was under new management it was worth bringing up this long-standing oversight that was, as I noted, corrected when the system was ported to SWTOR.
