So you are a Magus. Firstly as all classes, you can be succesfull with good judgement and awareness. Follow the eb and flow of battle, placing yourself behind the melee classes, starting to kite / root when opposition makes a beeline for you, detaunting attackers, assisting and prioritizing your targets and helping your backlines out when they get jumped by say a Witch Hunter (etc) by applying snare, root and ultimately pounding them to the ground with your dots/nukes + horror pet. Now let's talk about a T1 Magus.
1) You are a bit tougher than a sorc, but don't be over confident in your survival skills.
2) You're damage is not as bursty as a full 100 Dark Magic sorc , but nonetheless with the right skills and good use of pets your damage is quite good, and steady.
3) You're able to put great pressure on enemy groups by using AOE dot Glean Magic, followed by AOE dot infernal blast, followed by Daemonic Lash spam.
Applying Resist debuffs and good use of pets is key to being a good magus. Often i see Maguses use Rend winds, Baleful dots, and Bolts without even applying debuffs and not even having a pet up. Badbadbad! First of all, your pink horror applies an elemental resist debuff, which makes all ele resist spells hit for more damage. Bind an easy to use key to pet attack so you may let your pet attack your chosen target. Slap Baleful on when possible, followed by Glean magic, and spam Rend Winds. This is your bread and butter combo. And its good! Steady damage as long as those resist debuffs are applied. You can use Surging Violet Fire as a finisher. A good magus will always keep his pet within 20 ft of range, do not forget the pet applies a buff to you that gives you +20% damage! You will be moving this pet around alot. ALWAYS stay busy. Don't have an immediate target to hit with your combo? light up some people with balefuls at range, if possible get a glean magic on them too if you got healers backing you up. detaunt the heaviest ranged attacker and dont get caught with a snare from a melee. This might seem like fluff damage, and sometimes it is, but it is an already applied resist debuff and hopefully their healers might forget to top off their lost health!
Sometimes you may find your group heavily engaged with the enemies and you could opt to select one target and focus it down, but i like to pressure as much as possible with AOE damage. Select a target in the midst of their group and apply Glean magic, get in closer for an infernal blast, and spam daemonic lash. Unlike a sorc, you cannot get interrupted, and it is DANG gud AoE damage. They will not like it for sure. You will be doing alot more damage than you would be doing to a single target. And in T1 there are no group heals. Many a time i made the difference in scenarios with AOE's.
Hopefully that helps some.
