People miss the point. A mara doesn't even need the regen gear to make people mad. They have a tree devoted to "fighting multiple opponents". Even worse for the last argument is that anyone can change a build to use the same gear. The complaints are just "Somone lost and is mad now".

Yeah, this all boils down to people being upset they can't kill players as fast as they want.

And well you dont have that problem in ESO because every decent build/player wont die in a 1v1 in under 5-10 minutes or at all. And building defense is was vast superior in duels as defensive items gave like 3k armor/mresist while offensive gave 1.Xk pen. I'm pretty sure ESO is the last game we should copy anything from.

Concerning regen: On my rather new WE I'm playing around with regen WB vs OKYs - well regen + defensive stats just feels stronger. But tbh in the end it doesn't matter so much - the biggest problem is to find fights with about similar numbers.
The thread has moved on quite a bit, but i just wanna reply

While duels can indeed last for a very long time (or even indefinitely) its primarily because the healing output is stronger than damage output and is not limited by cooldowns or other mecahnics. You can have two glass cannon builds matched in a duel and until someone misses a block or dodge or runs out of resources they will also survive for 10 minutes against each other.
So its not a result of defence stacking, but the lack of limitations on how much healing you can pump out in a prolonged fight.

The duelling builds that live for 10 minutes of non stop combat are still running a ton of damage, and if you aren't on the same level as them you will melt in literal 3 seconds when they look your way  Because otherwise you simply wont kill anyone half competent and people will refuse to duel you (or in the open world will swarm you with friends and teabag on your corpse, eso pvp'ers really dislike def builds )

So my point about defensive builds not being a dominant in meta because they can not outmatch dps builds healing output still stands

p.s. im not sure if you're misremembering something or it was changed before i started playing, but since 4 years ago all armor & armorpen values are matched - on buffs, traits, set bonuses and so on. I do know that before i joined there were some absolutely nasty def stacking options going on with Ironblood, maj Prot and similar percentage buffs having additive scaling resulting in crazy gains when you get all of them
