Returning Player : Need help deciding on a class.

Hey guys! So stoked to have stumbled upon this little gem. Just yesterday me and a friend were texting how we missed Warhammer and then later in the day we found RoR :)

Anyways, my friend is going to be playing a healing spec warrior priest. I have no idea what I want to play, to many options haha.

I am looking for something that can dish out some damage (doesn't have to be stat board topping), synergise well with his WP, and be functional even when he isn't around. I would also like to be viable in both open RVR and keep sieges/defenses. Nothing is worse then standing on the walls twiddling your thumbs waiting for the push to happen.

My current thoughts were:
2h IB: good synergy between the two classes but not sure about his damage as well as being viable in seiges/defenses.

slayer: oh so squishy haha. The true definition of taking full advantage of a pocket healer. I like to think of myself as advanced in my ability to play games so not worried about the mechanics. I would really just be worried how life would be when my friend isn't on.

White Lion: Front lines to crazy? Pull them back. Pounce seems pretty nifty as well. Not sure how well he will synergise with the WP though. Seems like a decent balance between damage and defense.

Bright Wizard: We did a BW + WP combo back in the day and it was devastating. But this also was before they kind of nerfed them a bit so no idea how they stand now.

other? Totally open to any and all suggestions that would best fill what I am looking for. It doesn't have to meet all criteria but the more the better :)

Thanks again and look forward to seeing you guys on the field.

I like WH myself, even though I might not be useful on walls, I can sneak around from posterns. Heck, last week during some T3 keep defence, my WH managed to be 2nd highest in deathblows when funnelling. (ofc T4 is different, but the class can be pretty good when played rightI)

Honestly though, you have 20 character slot, make a lot of chars and play them all a bit.
Don't play the game so that you can "please" others, play it so that you enjoy it yourself.

Hey there, although you're not listing what style of a WP your friend would be rolling (melee or backline healing), I'd say that from your list the most obvious and best combination would be the IB+WP combo. The reasons for this are obvious, a melee WP has two weaknesses, both stemming from easily dying when unable to actively heal in melee, with crowd control and kiting being the weaknesses. As an IB you can guard the WP prolonging the time they have to get out of CC or find a target to heal from (or cast some heals, you can also buff their willpower which will be even more relevant once the experimental changes are implemented again, quadruple buffed capped STR/WP anyone?).

You also debuff armor, which is less relevant if your friend is going to be mostly melee healing as the next iteration of the melee healer changes seem to be retaining the undefendable status of melee lifetaps. Plus there's a myriad of tools that will help your friend shine in combat (and incoming and an outgoing heal debuff, healers would die with a glance), think of an IB as sort of an enabler and damage assist. Though as you point out, unless you carry around a set of defensive gear with a shield and jump into a warband at keep sieges you will be kinda useless unless your friend is around to hunt around the outskirts of the big fights with you.

Slayer+WP is much streakier and unreliable as the IB combo because of lack of guard and CC. You will have issues with getting kited (the archetype prevalence is firmly in RDPS favour here on RoR) and your friend will have a difficult time keeping up a Slayer when he's unable to melee heal. The two careers essentially share the same weaknesses and strengths (weak to CC and kiting but amazing in melee combat as long as you're not facing a tank wall) so you're essentially doubling up on the risk-reward side of things. There's also almost no immediate synergies between the two careers that wouldn't be there for other MDPS+WP combo. Also Slayers are even worse when it comes to keep sieges, especially since your friend can't enter the postern with you by using the bypass postern renown ability.

The advantage a WL has over a slayer is mobility, CC and burst. The synergies as far as the toolkit goes are apparent, the WL brings a stun, silence, fetch, an armor debuff, mobility and the WP brings the healing, cleansing, a heal debuff and buffs, they are both capable of considerable burst when specced for it so things should die easily. The combo would also be less prone to being kited since the WL eats goblins for brunch. But again, very little to do when it comes to keep sieges, but that is the way of the melee careers, it's mostly the RDPS and healers that have fun in a siege. Although hunting around the outskirts or simply roaming and controlling BOs and supplies is still a worthwhile task.

Can't comment much on the BW combo but it feels like a different healer would fit better with a BW, something like a DPS/lifetap AM because they synergise incredibly well with sustain, being able to kite and making it easier for the BW to kite, a heal debuff and contributing to the burst.

All in all, if your friend is rolling a melee WP any kind of a tank would be your best bet, although IBs really are the best when paired with a WP. If he's intending to heal then a MDPS might fit better with a WP since their kiting potential isn't the best and they tend to face-tank opponents giving you the chance to beat them up!

Good luck!

Thanks for some amazing responses, especially you blaqwar. I actually don't know what type of healing, I better ask haha. It sounds like if he goes melee healing then iron breaker and if back lines then probably a white lion so I can deal with ranged. Might go BW as well so I can be A bit more active in sieges.

Also I just thought of something. Back in the day I loved the concept of grenadier engineer but the DoT the put out really just became fluff in t4+ with all the heal spam. Are they still this way or has RoR given them some love in the grenadier department. I checked the logs but I didn't see anything.

Thanks again guys :)
