Help a New Guy Pick a Class!

So my friends are all about this game and want me to come play with them. I am going to download it tonight but just wnated to get a thread going with some suggestions on a class based on what my buds have told me they are playing. I dont like healing so im not interested in those classes. Heres what my buds have so far:

Magus - Blackguard - Shaman - Zealot (Not playing a Disciple anymore)

What do you guys think would fit well in this group if we want to do some group v group type fights? Or even kite big numbers...they said they want to do both. If I can 1v1 things thats a big bonus but not sure if thats possible in this game.

Thanks all!

Dps DoK is nice. You get to heal with some decent dps and if you are really good and have a tank you should have no problem topping damage and healing. Only problem is, it's easily kited.

I'd recommend a Marauder or any other melee dps.

Sorc/sh

You could go Mara as well, but without your full six on it won't be near as good and melee just sucks right now imo, just a liability in everything outside of 6v6.

Group comp is fine except magus is always better traded for sorc, unless you want to run a full ranged kite group. BG could try to go immortal spec and just try to control the field confront while you gib ppl with 3rdps. That said one will have to be sh for heal debuff, you can't play without it.

Depends if you know what playstyles you like:

Attacker (DPS)
- Get good at creating burst damage on enemies
- Get good at knowing who and when to de-taunt (reduce incoming damage to you)
- Get good at knowing when to single target focus that healer in small scale fights
- Get good at knowing when to burst big area of effect damage in large scale fights, funnels etc, you can't kill 100 players 1 at a time when both sides have instant rez :) but get good coordinated aoe damage right and choo choo!

Defender (Tank)
- Guard is your biggest tool (-50% damage to 1 grouped ally within 30ft of you), get good at using it well, predict who will be focused in your team and help them stay alive, switch when needed and make sure your in range or it doesn't work! Use this well and you double the survival of your group
- Get good at knowing when and where to buff your allies and reduce the abilities and damage of your enemies
- Learn to predict the enemy and control them, punt that WE/WH who just un-stealthed next to your healer in backlines flying through the air off a cliff, challenge and stagger that enemy melee train push and disrupt it.
- Importantly you are ironclad and when your attackers(DPS) can't get close to damage your enemies, you go first guarding them, and then they can!

Support (Healer)
- Possibly the most influential archtype, you are the only one who can actually in any worthwhile way, replen both health points and action points (stamina) to all of your grouped allies.
- Get good at knowing how to burst heal a single ally when they are focused and predicting who is going to take damage
- Get good at knowing how to burst aoe heal when large fights happen, 4 good aoe healers in a warband can change the complete outcome of a fight
- Get good at knowing when and where to cleanse, not point trying to heal normal damage + poison damage, when you can cure the poison and only heal the normal damage?
- Get good at knowing when to buff allies, how too and in what situations
- Expect to be the focus of some damage, learn how to defend against this damage and detaunt!
- Most importantly positioning, only the best healers know where to stand, you have a big range, use it and keep out of damage where you can so you can deliver the greatest healing and change the outcomes of fights.

I've been lucky enough to play over half the classes now, nearly half to 40/40, would recommend the below:
- Attacker (DPS) - BW/Sorc ranged or Mara/WL melee (all fun, challenging, flexible and actually desired in many situations)
- Defender (Tank) - BO/SM KOTBS, Chosen (all fun, challenging, flexible and actually desired in many situations)
- Healer - RP/Zealot, WP/DOK (all fun, challenging, flexible and actually desired in many situations)

If i was to start again, i would make a SM/BO first, then BW/Sorc, then RP/Zealot.

black orc

a big, loud brawler who is excellent at tying up enemies. will allow your magus and shaman to spec very offensively

chosen

better group support than the black orc, but less damage and CC, a pretty safe option

marauder

BG already has an (albeit slightly worse) armour and tough debuff, but a mara will bring the full trio with wounds and a good amount more dmg (if he cant bring it to bear). will need to be babysat at all times

squid herder

very safe option. heal debuff, very mobile, ranged cast-while-moving snare helps with roaming, can basically look after himself

i'd go black orc cause with 5 men you really just want something big and smashy. the BG has little "presence" and will seriously struggle to tie up enemies alone

If you want to kite big numbers, specifically having a Chosen for second tank (for auras), and a SH for second dps (for Run Away + Ranged DPS), is ideal.

I'd say another tank would fit well in here. especially if either your zealot or shaman are DPS. You'll have two guards to spread around the squishies, and more crowd control. Also, with a dedicated shield tank, the Blackguard can rock a 2h, which many blackguards seem to want to do.

Both Chosen and Black Orc make for fantastic shield tanks. Chosen is particularly useful to groups, due to their constant group-wide buffs. Black orc offers a stat steal for his group, but mostly provides good burst damage along side high defenses. Sword and board black orc is cookie-cutter. With two tanks you also have the opportunity for them to guard eachother, aka cross-guard. This is quite useful when tanking keep lords and bosses in lairs. It's also not terrible in RvR if your tanks are getting focused.

You may want to find a sixth player for your little party. I would recommend that player rocks a MDPS. MDPS are really good at bursting down single targets, which is important in RoR where healers can keep people alive pretty much infinitely. You can very rarely kill someone by attrition when they have a healer. A choppa or marauder would be a perfect compliment to your team for the sixth spot. Alternatively you could occupy the MDPS slot yourself... but you will find yourself focused extremely hard with only one tank to assist you. Also, tanks provide an AoE root and Crowd Control that are very useful for kiting.

Also ORCS IZ DA BEST. IF YOU ENT GREEN YOU ENT MEAN.
