"New" Player with an odd question RE: names

Played the official one waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when, found out about this, got stoked to play it again. No issues on my part and looking to be a part of this community. I loved this game so much.

Weird question time:

I've had no problems creating a character and naming them, I'm pretty good with names. But my buddy who I convinced to come play with me has had an absolute hellscape of a time with a name. I watched him try over 60 different names - with some really insane spelling on some - and duplicates all around. Is there really that many different characters and names taken or is there some kind of naming bug going on? Just curious.
