Crash at "Logging In...."

Hi All,
New to RoR, just created an account and downloaded the game. I used the direct download button, everything seemed to install fine. Run the RoR launcher and it seemed to patch itself fine. Entered my login details and clicked connect, the game launched fine. Watched the cinematic, agreed to the terms of service, in the dialog box it went through "Entering the fray....", then "Connecting to server...." and "Handshaking....", but when it gets to "Logging In...." I get booted from the game.

A popup message is displayed saying " The server has closed your connection. This could be because the server is restarting, or because you were removed by server staff. Please check the website for server status."

Not sure why this occurs, but it happens every time. I looked through the forums to try and find the same problem, but couldn't find anyone else describing this. I've tried logging in using my VPN set to the UK, as a different issue was solved by this in some threads, but it didn't work.

I'm not the most tech savvy guy, but if anyone can think of what I can do to fix this I will give it my best shot.

Cheers for any advice!

[2019/03/02 21:24:31] MythLogin::LoginClient::Teardown: Exhausted all servers in cycle.

Not sure if this helps anyone figure out why I can't get into the game.

I've tried downloading via torrent, direct download, installing on different drives, logging in via VPN set to france or elsewhere in europe, and making sure RoR is exempt from all firewalls and virus scans etc. I'm not sure what else to try.

I really liked this game when it was originally released, and would love to play it again. Sadly unless someone else has a clue as to what is causing it to crash, it seems like it isn't meant to be.
