this is the extended “How to install” Return of Reckoning guide.
Yes, it’s a long guide, but I want to explain really everything to avoid any possible issues.

How to Download the Game Files

!!! Before you start the download process and the installation process, disable your Antivirus, Firewall and your Malware detection programs.
These can potentially interfere with an install. If you are using Kaspersky or a similar program, check also your Windows Defender, even if you think it’s disabled.

If you don't manage your antivirus, eventually a client update will come along and critically break the game for you. Do not ignore this, we see it all the time.

Why should you do this?

Spoiler:

Some Antivirus programs, Firewalls, Hardware Routers, and other security programs can be more aggressive than others, and in particular the RORLauncher has been flagged in the past. Partially because this is not a well known application in the wild, and partially because of how it works.
The Launcher manipulates objects in memory to make the game work with our server.
Some aggressive antiviruses automatically deem this to be virus-like behavior.
They check with their database of approved applications when they see this, and if they don't find our application in there, it gets a Generic flag and is sometimes blocked or damaged.

Because of this, we have to recommend that when you download with the Torrent, that you have your security disabled, and then whitelist the folder before turning it all back on.

We have repeatedly reached out to many AV companies and databases, many who responded accepted it as clean, and many others simply never responded leaving it with that Generic tag.

As you can see here VirusTotal which is a very common database, is showing the launcher as clean in the vast majority of AV's. However, old definitions even from a company that doesn't have us flagged, can still cause problems.

Most people don't realize it, but Windows 10 has a built in anti-virus tool. You'll need to add your Warhammer folder to an exclusion list, or it might throw an error for the reasons above. This is a nice guide.

If you have some other Antivirus blocking things, you'll need to figure that out with them, or just uninstall it.

TL;DR - The RORLauncher is safe. The torrent is safe. Please disable your AV BEFORE downloading, and whitelist the folder BEFORE turning it back on to prevent any potential issues.

1 // Open the Torrent and drag & drop the ReturnOfReckoning-Oct2021.torrent file.
2 // At the “Local Files Location” you can switch the destination of your download folder. If you press “Start” Tixati will start the download.

Whats inside the ReturnOfReckoning folder?


Content of the downloaded ReturnOfReckoning folder

// DirectX 9.0c is the required Directx9 version for RoR.

• !!! Even if you already have Directx12 or so, you have to install it. Just open the folder and run the DXSETUP.exe !!!

// Warhammer Online - Return of Reckoning

• This folder contains all game files and is required for the following installation process.

Directory Rights

MOVE THE Warhammer Online - Return of Reckoning FOLDER OUT OF THE ReturnOfReckoning-september2022 FOLDER AND MOVE THE Warhammer Online - Return of Reckoning FOLDER TO:

• c:\ for instance move it to c:\Games

• but NOT inside c:\ Program Files; it should be in a folder which it has write access!

2 // Remove the write-protection from ALL files inside the Warhammer Online - Return of Reckoning folder.

• Right click Warhammer Online - Return of Reckoning folder > properties > disable the read-only box and apply it to all files.

• The important thing is that all files inside have been unchecked Read-only atleast once.

• Don't worry if the box still looks filled afterward (it's a visual bug from windows).

Antivirus, Firewall, or Malware detection programs

1 // Check that your whole Warhammer Online - Return of Reckoning folder is whitelisted in your Antivirus (*Windows Defender*) program.
2 // Check if your Firewall or Maleware detection program doesn't interfere with the install.

TORRENT DOWNLOAD - Please, replace the RoRLauncher.exe

• If the link doesn't respond, just copy&paste the URL

3 // Put the new RoRLauncher.exe back into the Warhammer Online - Return of Reckoning folder.
4 // You may also try running the RoRLauncher.exe with Administrator privileges.

• Right click RoRLauncher.exe > properties > run administrator

The Install

1 // Run the RoRLauncher.exe
2 // Let it update.

• Sometimes it takes a few seconds until the update starts.

• If it's around 70k files or 170k files. Stop the update. Something went wrong!

3 // Start the game until you reach the character selection and close the Game + Launcher again.
4 // Open again the Launcher, wait 5 seconds. Now the game should be ready!
5 // Additional switch the launcher to the 32-bit version to avoid weird animation bugs.

• Click the gearwheel in the right upper corner

• Choose the "32 Bit" option

• Save

6 // Just start the game and enjoy!

Troubleshooting

The Launcher says: Invalid User/Password, but I can login on the forum

Spoiler:

+ Reason: This happens when you use special letters like Russian letters or for example: á à â. Or you’ve got a new password after you forgot your last one and haven’t changed it yet. Or/and it’s too long

+ Solution:
- Change your password. Where to change your password (forum > profile > Edit account settings)
- Keep your password simple. Max 8 characters and no weird signs.
- If nothing helps, write Wargrimnir an Email: [email protected]
make sure, you are writing from the same Mail account as your linked RoR Account.

The launcher is a trojan / malware!

Spoiler:

+ Reason: The mechanism used in order to launch the client is picked up by anti-malware heuristics. Nothing we can do about that.
You can do something about it. Exclude the entire WAR folder in your anti-virus software, Windows Firewall/Defender, or whatever other software you have that would do something like this. How to do this is up to you to figure out, each bit of software is going to have its own procedure.

One of many .net issues

Spoiler:

fixed the issue without reinstalling .net.
Solution by Cezanti
since it seemed to have something to do with WMI I:

Ran windows update again to make sure it was up to date, there was something for all the .net packages.

Also while this was going on I did the following.

* cmd
* net stop winmgmt
* renamed the c:\windows\system32\wbem\repository folder
* comp restart with win update
* cmd
* net stop winmgmt
* winmgmt /resetRepository
* reboot

after this the game runs fine.

this was the windows update
either one of these could have been key
either the update or a corrupt wmi

THIS IS ONE OF MANY .net ISSUES! SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO REINSTALL .net COMPLETELY. If you have further question, join the RoR discord!

My launcher is downloading ~170k files.

Spoiler:

- Stop your launcher.
- Make sure your Torrent is closed properly (check taskmanager)
- Check if your game is in c:\ and all rights are set. Go into folder properties of the game and uncheck read only + launcher.exe (Right click your folder/file> properties > uncheck the unblock check box on the bottom, apply)
- If you moved the game, check if the game is still whitelisted (antivir)

My launcher is downloading/updating an inappropriate amount of files (~20k files]

Spoiler:

- If you have the feeling this amount is too huge, stop your launcher first.
- If your local character set is different like in the turkish language, check this guide viewtopic.php?f=4&t=42808
- Otherwise check the install guide again, maybe you missed a step.

I only see weapons and all characters are invisible (same for all T-pose and bag issue people out there)

Spoiler:

- Close your game and restart your launcher, maybe you are missing some patches.
- If no more patches left and the issue still persist, use the repair function (launcher > cog > repair)

I can't reache the ingame settings (set your game into windowed mode)

Spoiler:

- close your game
- go to your RoR game folder > user > and open the UserSettings.xml with an editor
here are all User Settings from the ingame configurations window....for example to set your game into windowed mode:

search for this line (line 4 or so)

and change it to

Code: Select all

<Mode window_frame="true" fullscreen="false" />

save the file
and start your game again

Error: System.IO.EndOfStreamException: Unable to read beyond the end of the stream.

This happen when you don't download the game via torrent.

How to Download:

- Run the Torrent file, with the Torrent app, and wait until it's finishes.

System.Reflection.Target...This BackgroundWorker is currently busy and cannot run multiple tasks concurrently
