[Squig Herder] question

Hey guys returning player here. Played this game live (never got to t4 though) and I played some RoR. I have an issue in mom's when I start out, I have an issue picking a class. I have most classes in this game leveled up to 15ish and I never decided on a main. As a noob here (not in mmos in general) I feel I should probably avoid healers and tanks for now and learn the game using something less integral to the survival of waebands. So I'm stuck on deciding between a Magus and a Squig Herder. I'd like to play something that's useful endgame but isn't screwed when alone or in small groups, and I figure because 90% of what I see on destro is melee dps or tanks rdps is the way to go. Which of these two would you guys recommend to someone new who wants to play a class that has some support or utility groups want?

Posting this in both chaos and green skin forums as it pertains to both.

Right this second, squig herders are in a relatively good place - both their melee spec and ranged specs do good damage, they have some survivability and great kiting abilities.

However, there are a lot of people playing squig herders, so not always easy to find a group. And, they're about to get nerfed. The devs are currently going through a big rebalancing of classes, so we don't know what the ultimate outcome will be, but SH are defs on the chopping block for next patch.

As with all things, best advice is to play something that you enjoy. If you like RDPS, either squig or magus will be fine. Squig currently probably stronger, but who knows what the balance will be like by the time you hit 40?!

I would also say, don't be put off playing either tank or healer. Tanks especially, with their high survivability, are a good way to learn the game. A lot of other players know not to bother hitting tanks, so you live a lot longer than everyone else! And as long as you learn how to guard swop, you'll be better than a lot of other tanks. Just don't go 2hander until you're in good gear! You'll also find it easier to get into groups compared to rdps.

Hey thanks for the advice! I just saw the patch notes and it seems like they weren't changed much. Am I safe to think that SH won't get more changes soon or is the update ongoing for all classes?

The most safe way to learn the game is any range or a tank class both for more survivability!! Classes get nurfed or buffed all the time but the one thing that never changes is playing from distance is always safer and makes you enjoy the game more!! Try the characters you have and now when you are at lvl16 you will come to t2-3-4 zone and you will see by yourself that any melee character needs a lot of patience to lvl up and enjoy the fights etc!! Hope it helped :)

The first of the balance patches was a couple of months ago, and was for tanks. This balance patch is focused on healers, the next one will be focused on DPS.

Ofc, most classes are getting some tweaks with each of the major patches, which is why SH got some updates today, but I expect they'll be getting more changes next time round too.
